This is in follow-up to my review posted Aug. 6, 2022. Unfortunately, this website automatically assigns “one star” to reviews posted.
Dr. Sanders swore an oath promising to uphold the art of medicine and act in the patients’ best interests.
Dr. Sanders violated this oath countless times during the 6 1/2 years I was in his care.
He engaged in what can only be described as “juvenile” tactics to humiliate and disrespect me. Hospital staff witnessed this but stood by and did nothing. I will never understand why he treated me in this manner,
I wanted Dr. Sanders’ expertise because he was “rumoured” to be “the best in London”. I needed surgical intervention so badly, I asked my family doctor in Midland to refer me to Dr. Sanders in Nov. 2015 before I was able to secure a family doctor in the London area.
Dr. Sanders still found it fitting to make me wait a further 3 1/2 years for assistance with my right foot and 4 1/2 years with my left foot. He then put me through 5 surgeries - 2 on my right and 3 on my left. 35 weeks on crutches over a 2 1/2 year period. I was 65 years old at the time. My “new” family doctor also encouraged me to stay the course with the “best in London”.
I filed a complaint with LHSC - Patient Services. In response, I received a letter from Dr. Sanders full of false statements. A letter to the former CEO at LHSC yielded a response stating complaints are taken seriously and she returned my file to Patient Services for further follow-up. This did not happen. Instead, I received an e-mail from Patient Services informing me my file had been closed and I could file a complaint with CPSO. A list of 16 questions Patient Services specifically requested, remain unanswered.
I filed a complaint with CPSO. I sat in utter disbelief when I read the report which led me to acquiring all my medical records, including Dr. Sanders’ consult notes.
1. No record of my first in-person consult in Jan. 2016. Dr. Sanders claims I started seeing him In Oct. 2016.
2. Dr. Sanders “claims” I DECLINED surgery from 2016 to July 2019.
3. Dr. Sanders “claims” I refused to do physio.
4. Dr. Sanders claims he offered me a 2nd opinion, He arranged a well-rehearsed consult with Dr. C. Del Baso at LHSC AFTER I had already endured 5 surgeries. Dr. Del Baso did make one very interesting statement. He said, “I only touch a foot once”. Yet the “best in London” put me through 5 surgeries?
Dr. Sanders did not take x-rays prior to the 1st surgery on my left foot. He claims my foot had not changed alignment since x-rays were taken 2 1/2 years earlier. My foot had deteriorated so badly it could only be described as “deformed”. He then found it fitting to throw my deformed foot to a resident in a surgery that did nothing to realign my foot. I was left with infection and nerve pain in my 2nd and 3rd toes which had both been shortened but nothing else had been done, In his letter to me, Dr. Sanders claims my foot “became contracted” as a result of this surgery, That is false and in my view, x-rays were deliberately omitted to cover up Dr. Sanders’ negligence in not providing me with timely assistance. At this point my silence and respect ended and I began questioning Dr. Sanders. Patient Services were not taking complaints at the time due to COVID.
The 2nd surgery on my left foot did improve the alignment but it was now very apparent that my 2nd and 3rd toes had been shortened extensively. When questioned, Dr. Sanders would not tell me why, My medical records explain what happened, DR. SANDERS SHORTENED THESE 2 TOES TWICE IN CONSECUTIVE SURGERIES. These 2 toes cannot contact the floor any longer leaving my other toes to carry the brunt. It is very painful.
In the final surgery, Dr. Sanders was to determine DURING surgery if my 5th toe might require attention yet minutes before I am taken to the OR, Dr. Sanders confronts me asking ME to decide if I want my 5th toe fused. I did not answer “yes” or “no”. He fused it. An independent orthopaedic surgeon later informed me that this should never be done. Yet, the “best in London” did this to me.? The pain, at times, is unbearable.
An independent review of my care was also conducted by Dr. Del Baso. Conclusion - Standard of Care was met!
The “complaint” process is designed to make the patient feel they are being heard. In reality, despite strong evidence of malice and unprofessional conduct, it is 100% weighted in favour of the healthcare “professional”. The patient has no rights and no voice. The legal process is equally flawed with no lawyer wanting to go up against the high priced lawyers on retainer with LHSC.
I cannot find the words to describe the devasting impact this has had on my life, both mentally and physically. Now, at the age of 69, I live in fear of losing my left foot.
What have I learned? If Dr, Sanders shows even the slightest indifference in helping you, WALK AWAY!!!
