A FRECKLE on a doctor’s phallus helped prove to a tribunal that a woman was telling the truth about a long-term sexual affair she had with her GP.
Fraser Coast doctor Stephen Gilliland, who denied the affair, was found guilty of professional misconduct, reprimanded and had his registration suspended for two years.
The married doctor had the affair with his married female patient while he was also the GP for her husband and children, a judge found in a Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal.
The pair had sex during appointments at Dr Gilliland’s practice, even at times when the children had appointments and were waiting outside, and once at a busy hospital, the tribunal accepted.
The female patient described a freckle on the doctor’s penis and a urologist who had examined him described several freckles. The tribunal said the fact the patient was correct about a mark or freckle supported her version of the affair and her evidence about the sexual relationship was “honest and reliable’’.
The tribunal also took into account records showing patterns of long calls between Dr Gilliland’s surgery and the woman’s home, finding his explanations “implausible’’.
The woman’s husband complained to a disciplinary body after his wife admitted in 2011 to the extramarital affair that ended their marriage.
The wife claimed it ran from late 2007 until early 2011 and the tribunal found it lasted at least two years, but Dr Gilliland, who practised at Hervey Bay, said there was never a sexual relationship.
The wife told her husband that several appointments she had with Dr Gilliland were really for sex and she would meet the doctor after-hours at his practice.
“She told him that when she took her children to medical appointments she would ask the children to wait for her in the waiting room while she went back to her appointment,’’ Judge Julie Dick said.
