Melissa has been our family doctor for years and we’ve always been very pleased with her professionalism and pleasant bedside manner. She takes time to explain things and has genuine interest in your wellness. She’s 5 stars all the way.

Dr Oberholster has been my GP since 2009. I consider myself so fortunate, she is extremely patient, compassionate , refers easily and gives excellent guidance. We are so lucky to have her in Nanaimo!

I have such trauma from having to deal with this doctor. She ordered traction on my spine where neurosurgery was required. Had the hospital not turned me away; warning that traction is no longer in practice, is 'barbaric', and would cause irreparable damage, I would likely be wheelchair bound if not worse. When I had to locate a surgeon myself, she was to do my pre-op data collection as per usual. She was annoyed at the fact that I went around her to seek a surgical approach as I was unable to walk or stand for over 6 weeks and she didn’t think this was anything more than an inconvenience. Three ambulance rides to the ER with a newborn, hourly muscle spasms, around the clock care for myself and my kids, this was unthinkable pain. She was vocally unsupportive of my decision to seek a specialist and as such, she rushed through my pre-op; among several things, she didn't collect my current weight, and instead used my pre-pregnancy weight from two pregnancies prior. I realized that too late and had to make a subsequent appointment to send that data to the hospital, otherwise I would have been under-sedated for my emergent surgery. When I went back to collect that missing data, the nurse felt the need to yell my post-pregnancy weight across the waiting room in an attempt to embarrass me. This was when I asked to have my records moved.
The surgeon was horrified that I had been living with that level of scar tissue, herniations and spinal trauma, he could not believe that a GP recommended traction and was very grateful that it hadn’t been carried out. He didn’t anticipate my ability to walk post surgery, but he was successful in having me regain mobility. I am very grateful for him

I see through some of these reviews that Oberholster has softened over the years and has become more favourable, I’m glad for her current patients. I can say that my experience with this doctor has left a terrible taste in my mouth and she has no business touching on specialized care.

The doctor I found since has shown me the benefits of referring out when he doesn't have expertise on the subject. He's not afraid of saying "I don't know but let me look into that, or I’ll refer you to someone who can answer some of those questions" He doesn't have the chip on his shoulders that some doctors tend to have. I'm glad I've finally got a doctor who understands this, and I hope in her years of practice Dr Oberholster has grown to understand this, because in my short time with her, she put my health, my mobility and my life at risk and I will never forget it.

I had a phone visit with my Doctor to go over forms l needed filled out. We did that and the doctor told me they wouldbe at the front counter waiting for me the next morning. I went in and the receptionist was unhelpful, couldn't find them,then told me the must not be ready. When i insisted the doctor had told me they would be there she looked again and found them. She wasn't friendly and did not apologize even after she found them. Doctor is wonderful....receptionist was not
