Biography
Dr. Sandeep Khandhar is board certified in cardiothoracic and general surgery. In 2019, he joined Virginia Cancer Specialists having over 20 years of clinical experience. He has a special interest in the management of Lung Cancer and employing minimally invasive surgical techniques. Dr. Khandhar earned a degree from Northwestern University in Biomedical Engineering followed by his medical degree. He then went on to complete his internship and residency in General Surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, where he also served as the administrative chief resident. There he completed a fellowship in Cardiothoracic Surgery and then further specialized in Thoracic Surgery and Thoracic Oncology at Duke University. He has been practicing cardiothoracic surgery in Northern Virginia for over a decade and has been granted many awards and honors. Among these honors were Northern Virginia Magazine Top Doctors and Washingtonian Top Doctors. He has served and continues to serve in many hospital leadership roles. In an effort to steer the direction of growth and development in surgical lung cancer treatment, he sits on the advisory boards of leading medical device companies globally, staying abreast of cutting-edge technological innovations in the thoracic field. Dr. Khandhar is passionate about collaboration and believes that the best possible outcomes occur when the entire thoracic oncology team – medical oncology, radiation oncology and thoracic surgery work together to care for the patient. Dr. Khandhar currently resides in Falls Church, Virginia with his wife and two daughters. In his spare time he likes to travel.

The Famous General Surgeon Doctor Khandhar
Even before seeing him, I was already surprised by how many doctors in this NVA area know him and know how great he is. As a 'cancers collector' with several different types of Lung Cancer on more than one lobes, both small cell and non-small cell, I am very fortunate to be his patient and just had a major surgery done by his talent, skills and experiences, and the latest technology in Robotic Assisted Thoracic Surgery (RATS) of Da Vinci system at Inova Fairfax hospital.
Before the surgery I was told, in general, that the surgeon would make 5 incisions/holes in my body (4 of them are for the robot's 4 hands) but Dr Khandhar must have performed a new technique/strategy using biportal RATS which left me with only 2 holes after surgery: a 4-cm multiport, and a small 8-mm incision for post-op chest tube drainage.
A whole RU lobectomy plus a RL wedge resection and 22 lymph nodes dissection, all came out from inside of my chest through that little 4-cm incision in about 2 and a half hours! Then discharged from hospital after only 1 night.
Unbelievable!
After 2 weeks now, everything has gone well and far above my & my family's expectations. Dr Khandhar continues to be my doctor even after surgery, guiding me through my cancer treatment, working in tandem with oncologist Dr McCarthy from the same Virginia Cancer Specialists group.
My prognosis of cancer-free after 3 months of chemo treatment is high thanks to both doctors and all the nurses at VCS and Inova Fairfax hospital -- especially Christy and Nikka from Dr Khandhar's group.
