Having seen several local psychiatrists and having been placed on over 25 different medications I was, to say the least, frustrated and not doing well. I was able to get an appointment with Dr. Spiro (he's hard to schedule with, plan on at least a 2 month wait). He did a thorough diagnosis and challenged my diagnosis of bipolar disorder. He said I don't have it and managed to wean me off of medications that were making me groggy and hard for me to function. It wasn't easy but we did it. Took about 6 months. We're meeting every other week now and things are going well. I recommend highly.

I cannot recommend Dr. Spiro enough. As other reviewers have said, he does both talk therapy and medication. Mostly the former. My medication needs were a bit complicated so it was helpful to have his medical expertise but I think I gained most from the talking. He helped me to see what was causing my mood dips and helped me to work with myself rather than fighting myself all the time. I'm not sure what his kind of therapy is called but I just call it effective. I met with him weekly for about a year.

I worked with Philip Spiro on my clinical depression for about 3 years until I moved out of town. He is an exceptional talk therapist and psychiatrist - the best of both worlds - and I can say he helped me out of the wost depressive pit ever! His style is very empathetic, but with a good dose of reservation,which means he doesnt come across as "warm and fuzzy" but neither is he cold/judging. Instead ofbeing a negative, this style was so effective, Ieneded up trusting his objectivity. It was a combo that worked extremely well for me, as well as 3 other friends who I referred to him for treatment. He is very popular -If you can get into see him, give it a few sessions - you will start to see results. Also very good with academics/grad-students/ faculty etc in the research triangle area.
