This is a difficult review to write, so please stick with me, as I have only a GED level education, and will be trying to do the best I can to offer important insight about this psychiatrist.
In 1983, I committed a crime of passion. I was already at the end of my rope, emotionally, from the recent death of my mom and an abusive friend that hurt me so much I attempted suicide, I was trying to bumble my way toward emotional healing when I walked into a room with a young woman; an old friend, who had been teaching me about physical romance and whom I'd fallen in love with, was commencing sexual relations with a mutual male friend. I was devastated. There was a gun nearby. After pleading with the fellow to leave, and being advised to leave myself by him, I grabbed a nearby gun and pointed it to my head. I wanted them to stop. I remained laying down with his pants open, she approached me. "Why don't you shoot yourself?" she said.
I was a little drunk, a little stoned and had taken strong anti depressants and tranquilizers, shortly before. I can't find words for how mean they seemed just then. I shot her. I kept shooting. He jumped up, pulling up his pants, and I shot him. I ran downstairs, past my grandparents to kill myself where they would not find me, and almost immediately realized what serious injuries I had just caused. And felt overwhelmed with hoping to save them. I dreaded that my dear friend could not be helped but had no idea about the fellows situation. The police station was nearby and I ran up and into it blurting out what I'd just done pleading with them to go to my house to help them. Simultaneously, they received a call from my grandparents.
Dr. Feldman was the young psychiatrist paid by the State to evaluate me.
While he did claim on the witness stand that the jury could reduce the conviction as he'd determined a defense of extreme emotional disturbance was valid, he lacked, in my view, the maturity, professionalism and regard for his profession's ethics to do so in a manner becoming an expert witness.
His testimony was wishy washy at best. He allowed the pervert assistant district attorney soon after forced to resign in disgrace for seeking sex for money from an innocent high school girl right in the court house and bragging to her about having been with underage girls before, since his college days, to express doubt about the certainty of his own evaluation. But most reprehensibly, he took it upon himself to change the words that the my friend had said from "why don't you shoot yourself?" to "...she said 'you don't have the BALLS to kill yourself.'" And while this may seem on its face value to be admirable, a psychologist I'd seen in prison once weekly for seven years explained with ZERO uncertainty that he believed the extreme emotional disturbance defence was totally valid and that NOTHING could change HIS perceptions.
In changing the words that I'd explained the woman had said, he sent an inappropriate message to the jury to mock the defense even as he presented it in court to receive his pay.
I feel because of his youth, desire to 'show off' his personal bias, that he proved himself incapable of functioning as an expert witness in my case.
I'd hoped that overhead years, he'd have matured, become more seasoned a practioner, and developed a higher regard and respect for the ethics of his own profession so as to own up to that reality. Because I would take my chances on a new trial with an expert witness who would not misquote what was said that sparked the commission of the underlying crime he was appearing as an expert witness to testify, relative to.
But despite leaving numerous civil messages with my contact numbers, he hasn't found the "wharewithall" to get back to me.
Just food for thought. I think there are higher level practioner -- especially if somebody's paying out of pocket. My initial call to one of his offices resulted in a woman with a slightly nasal tones asking, regarding my request for an appointment with Feldman, "whaddya want, now.... medication????" Guess that's the kind of shrink he ended up as. Unfortunately, I relied on him early on his journey there :-(

Dr Feldman is the most compassionate , warm and caring Psychiatrist ( and human being) I have ever come across.I consider myself truly fortunate and blessed to have found him. Unfortunately, I have been to many-Psychiatrists including "Top" Park Avenue and Fifth Avenue M.D.'s- and even an internationally reknown Psychiatrist who was the head of a department of a teaching hospital..Dr. Feldman has been able to help me with severe anxiety and Depression when no one else has. He checks his messages 365 days a year-even on those extremely rare occasions when he is out of the country. He returns phonecalls promptly . He truly cares about his patients and is certainly not in this for money; he has spent far more time with me than I have been able to pay for. He is a rare gem. He has called other doctors in other specialties on my behalf and gone beyond the extra mile for me and for his other patients. I can not recommend him highly enough.
