Doctor Woolfrey was great! I ruptured my patella tendon at 10am in a student/staff volleyball game and by 10pm that same night he operated on my knee. He was very detailed and explained everything I needed to know about the surgery. The post op is going on. Only 5 days in and my pain is minimal in my knee. I give all the credit to Doctor Woolfrey and his ability to get the surgery done on the same day I ruptured my patella tendon. Glad to have such an amazing surgeon who really cares about his patients!

Here is a true, honest, fair and balanced review of Dr Michael Woolfrey and his staff. I’m early 40’s male who was healthy but was carrying a few too many pounds. First met Dr Woolfrey for a suspected severe case of osteoarthritis in my right knee. At the time I was 375lbs (I’m 6’4”). Dr Woolfrey said listen big guy, you’re very active so if I put a knee in at your weight, I won’t be doing anyone a favour. He recommended Bariatric Surgery, and I followed his advice because he was right. Dec 2015, I had RnY bariatric surgery done. By June 2016 I was back in to see Dr Woolfrey as I was able to lose 100lbs, so that I can get a knee put in. Dr Woolfrey was very surprised to see how focused and dedicated I was at managing weight. He did an arthroscopy of right knee, confirm no cartilage left behind my knee cap. June 2017, he did a partial knee replacement and put in Titanium alloy implant. The first 60 days post op I was coping with pain, daily exercises and physiotherapy. At the 60 day mark, I was bending to 120 degrees, implant was tight, and perfectly aligned 90 degrees. In September, I noticed that the swelling was worsening, debilitating pain, heat discharge and major skin discolouration, my entire knee turns red, blue, purple, etc... I followed up with Dr Woolfrey, he said keep applying ice and keep leg elevated. He said said it could take up to one year for the knee to settle down. I continued with regular 90 day appointments, all the while pain and symptoms getting worst and spreading through my body. June 2018 I told Dr Woolfrey I was in so much pain, I wanted to have my right leg amputated above the knee, have a prosthetic leg put in. He did second arthroscopy to rule out deep rooted infection,, unfortunately all came back negative. My pain and symptoms were quickly spreading throughout my body. Dr Woolfrey was suspecting rheumatoid arthritis (RA), even though all my RA tests came back negative. I was referred to a rheumatologist. At my very first appointment, rheumatologist did a thorough physical examination and confirmed that I didn’t have rheumatoid arthritis. He asked Dr Woolfrey do research and investigate possible hypersensitivity (metal allergy or response) to the knee implant. The rheumatologist explained all of this in a letter back to Dr Woolfrey. After being ignored, rheumatologist decided to start by process of elimination to find root cause of my health problems. Over a period of 10 months we tried everything under the sun, Leflunomide, Arava, DMARD such as Methotrexate (cancer and autoimmune medication with very nasty side effects). this point rheumatologist decided to add a Biologics, Humira to my list of medication. Once again, side effects of Humira were very intense and severe. It completely changed who I was, sleeping a lot and I needed a box of Tylenol cold & flu to get through the first three days post my bi-weekly injection of Methotrexate and Humira. June 2019 I go back to Dr Woolfrey for a follow up. At that time he saw that my right knee was still severely swollen, I can barely walk and in a lot of pain. Dr Woolfrey explained to me that there’s nothing else he can do for me because there’s no blood test that exist for metal allergy testing. He recommended I try compression stockings, may alleviate swelling and pain. End of August I had follow up with rheumatologist and begged him to stop treatment because of all the nasty side effects. He said we had to stay the course in order to get results. I was feeling my body shutting down, I wasn’t feeling right, not sleeping right and most definitely not eating because of a lack of appetite. At this point weighing 190lbs. I got home totally discouraged after being told to keep taking meds that were making me sicker. I did my own research, and after being told that “in-vitro” Metal LTT didn’t exist, well this is highly inaccurate. It doesn’t exist in Canada, however there are two labs who do this type of testing, Orthopedics Analysts- Chicago, IL, and MELISA test in Neuss, Germany. I am in contact with labs and doing testing on my own. The sad part and the hard part for me is that I truly like Dr Woolfrey. He’s a genuinely nice guy with really good bed side manners, he’s excellent surgeon, but if you need Intense active care with specialized testing done, research and out of the box thinking, unfortunately, he’s not your guy. In my case, he will blame it on everything, but the implant because it’s a rare situation. Rare doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen. If you want the best surgeon, see Dr Woolfrey but keep in mind that if you develop something “rare” post surgery, you will be on your own to fight and advocate to get to the root cause of your issues. His admin, Diane, she is the sweetest lady! At times she will be firm with people because she is swamped, and probably could use some help! Be nice to her because if you need a form filled out, she can make it happen very quickly for you. Good luck to each and everyone of you!!!!!

Dr Woolfrey has replaced both my knees this year. His skill, protocols , procedures and staff are excellent and always improving. He is caring, knowledgeable and a very skilled surgeon. Living in a seniors apartment I can say the incisions from my surgery are healed so well. Second to none. As busy as he is, he insures your questions are answered and you understand what's going on. He is alwaye reassuring. I went into each operation knowing I was in the best hands. It is wonderful to move with no pain after a long wait.

Dr Woolfrey has the best patient bedside manor we have ever seen. Very personable and thorough. Cannot say anything but good things about him and the staff at the Brantford Fracture Clinic. Wish more specialists were like him. We feel very lucky to be under his care.

I can’t say enough about Dr.M. Woolfrey. He’s such a talented orthopaedic surgeon.I had a total knee replacement 3.5 weeks ago.My recovery is amazing.Im so happy that I’m hving my other knee replaced in four months time......please! Do not book any other appointments on the day that you see Dr.Woolfrey..chances are you will have to wait a while to see him.I guarantee it will be more than worth it.....His assistant doctors are equally talented...please be patient with his secretary “Diane”. This lady is amazing. She is the beating heart that takes care and organizes appointments and anything else pertaining to your visit with doctor Woolfrey. She runs a tight ship and runs it very efficiently. To anyone reading this review I say”you have made the right decision going to Dr.M. Woolfrey.” I certainly know that I did...Jennifer Innes....

Met Dr. Woolfrey on the day my 90 year old Mother broke her hip. He was extremely professional and compassionate, had her surgery done the same day. He answered all of our questions regarding the surgery and recovery. My Mother has made a full recovery and is back at home. I would highly recommend Dr. Woolfrey to anyone requiring orthopedic surgery. Thank-you Dr. Woolfrey!
