Best doctor alive hands down. Understanding about no insurance. Has done about 8 surgeries on me. I will NOT go to any other colorectal surgeon even though I live an hour and a half from Mt Sinai.

I new Mt Sinai was the place for colorectal surgery. I had a 35 yr history of UC, in total remission for past 14 yrs. And then, out of nowhere, as will eventually happen with long UC history, cancerous lesion popped up on routine colonoscopy with my gastro guy in NJ. Three names popped up as recommended at Sinai...Steinhagen as the director, Adrian Greenstein (was out of town), and Joel Bauer (had consultation with him, doesn't take insurance...outrageous price...egomaniac). Steinhagen was the slam dunk choice. Low key, NO ego whatsoever, a complete gentleman with a great background. Removed my colon in early January, needed chemo as there was one node involvement, will complete chemo then have reversal j-pouch surgery. Dr S has been the best all the way through. Could not have made a better choice.

Dr. Steinhagen is the most compassionate, thorough, competent and accessible Dr. that I have ever met! I suffer from a birth injury from delivering my child called rectovaginal fistula. I knew from the beginning that he is a teaching surgeon and while I was not always happy showing everyone all of my business I knew it was for the greater good. Many websites say that my type of injury was eliminated in 'developed' countries but it still happens and is VERY hard to repair (Please do not ever have an episiotomy and forceps during delivery-MY OPINION). After my surgeries he was ALWAYS available to answer my concerns and his staff is wonderful also.New doctors need Dr. Steinhagen's valuable knowledge from surgical experience to help women like me.

I could not say enough kind things about Dr Steinhagen. Caring man, returns phonecalls within minutes, spends time with his patients answering questions and concerns. I used to think Dr Fazio at Cleveland Clinic was the best, until Dr Steinhagen saved my quality of life.

Dr Steinhagen is the best period, his knowledge and kindness is unmatched by another type of surgeon . He returns calls answers all questions asked and makes himself available when needed. His office is run professionally when you are given an appointment you do not wait for hours as you do in other doctors offices. I can not say enough good things about this kind and caring doctor. May God bless you Dr Steinhagen

Following a severe, extremely rare incident of colon perforation w/barium that had solidified & metastatic colon ca,my mother-in-law was deemed in-operable in Jersey because her abdomen was "too complicated." She had severe adhesions& intestines like tissue paper.I called Mt. Sinai and asked for the Head of Colo-Rectal Sx and was given Dr. Steinhagen's name. I asked if he would be kind enough to call me back and this wonderful man(not know ing me at all)spent 1 hour on the phone w/me!He listened to every detail of what unfolded with my mother-in-law,agreed to see us,and then ran tests like none of the other hundred we had been through. In my opinion,he is near solely responsible for ex-tending her life more than another 9 years. He was kind, gentle, exuded a tremendous patience and showed her compassion beyond anything I have witnessed in my 20 years of nursing experience. These are qualities long lost in many surgeons, especially ones of this calibar and skill level. No one is better!

Dr Steinhagen is a mensch. My 20 year old son was told that he would need a total colectomy by doctors in central Virginia. Even though Dr. S was not our doctor and had never met us, he returned our desparate phone call and told us to bring the kid to Mt Sinai. Mt son had a fecal impaction of over 20lbs. Dr St did tests and we are waiting for the results. he is a great doctor and a real human being.

I have to agree with the poster on 2/23/08, This doctor doesn't play the ethics of doctors patient relations ,which is supposed to be whats said between you and your said is sacred . So much for the hippocratic oath with Steinhagen. Quite unprofessional as he shared my case like an open book even after I made a firm request as the patient not to. He just laughed . If you value your privacy and don't want to wonder why everyone knows everything about you .Just be looking at them . no you're not paranoid he's just like an adolescent teenage girl ,with your medical records , Beware !

My name is Chris Masterson. Dr. Steinhagen saved my life. He helped me when doctor's at the Cleveland Clinic would not. He is a compassionate human being and I will always be grateful for the 3 operations he performed. He is a class act!
