Recommended and performed back surgery; stated 90% chance of recovery without pain;performed different surgery than surgery explained to patient. Patient recommends always getting a second opinion when considering any type of surgery, particularly spine surgery. Also advisable to obtain copies of medical records and request revision of any inconsistencies within records. Dr. Cowan's staff was extremely courteous and seemed completely competent. Discuss with your surgeon the policy of decision making if the advised and agreed upon surgery is not possible once in the operating room - will surgeon stop and seek permission to change surgery? Or advise and obtain consent on all possible options prior to going into the operating room. This is a good idea for ANY type of surgery or procedure for which anesthesia will be utilized.
