Spent a lot of time to discuss my problem before deciding where to put the injection in my spine.

He specializes in epidural (spinal column) injections of anti-inflammatory steroid and anesthetic medication for back pain. Despite seeing two neurosurgeons, who advised a lumbar fusion, he more correctly defined the area in need of injection and I achieved eight weeks of complete relief with another month of feeling "not bad." With three to four injections (completely painless) per year and oral pain medication for the rough times, I have no intention of undergoing back surgery for a decade or so. In the interim period I anticipate that there will be significant technological advances coupled with better studies of what form of treatment is most effective. Given this, there's no rush to be cut open front and back. Anyway, as a RN for the past 23 years, I'm just too damned afraid to submit to such a major surgical event until I'm reduced to crawling in order to cross the road. P.S. He clearly explained what he was doing and why he felt it to be the best approach. I like being taught.
