Amazing bedside manners, knowledgeable and sympathetic. He took a chance on us when others said no for a surgical procedure, to help us get further along in our infertility journey. We are grateful as he helped us closer to our goals. The surgery was a success and help answer unknowns. I had a quick recovery and minimal pain. I would highly recommend Dr. G. McTavish.

Fabulous Doctor. Has always taken time to explain what is happening and why we do different tests or surgeries and listens. Kind and Compassionate.

I have see Dr. McTavish for nearly 10 years to preserve fertility while dealing with an ongoing gynaecological issues. I had a couple surgeries. Initially he treated me well, made me feel valuable and cared for. He always had a smile. Within the last year, I had to see him again. I was prescribed a drug for twice the duration of time as indicated in the literature. My pharmacist cautioned me, therefore I phoned the office to confirm the treatment. The directions for treatment remained unaltered. At the end of the duration of treatment, I learned that it was not effective, caused a lot of problems including an initial stage in the development of cancer. I was given only once chance: Hysterectomy. Knowing my current diagnosis, I found the human trial studies of this drug and studied them thoroughly. The statements in the study are opposite of what Dr. McTavish told me. I learned a hysterectomy would be too early at this time. With good luck and repeated surgery for the initial condition (which he refused) I could be spared the hysterectomy.
When I asked Dr. McTavish for the longterm complications of hysterectomy, he mentioned only bleeding and infection during surgery. I am well aware of the long term complications and know that he never gave me the full complications when he asked me to sign the consent for all previous surgeries.
Dr. McTavish indicated that I am coming too often, pointing at the entries in my chart. I know he did not make as much money as he could have, if he would have seen new patients. But I do not believe that I returned too often. If one is placed on a treatment, one should be monitored and allowed to return if problems arise. Seeing a doctor up to three times a year is not too much, especially if treatments cause more harm. He also indicated "What will my wife think, if she would see that you are coming this often?" I can only think of "Is there no privacy in this clinic?" "Did his wife not know that she married a gynaecologist?"
I recently learned form other sources, that he is going to retire. I wish him a happy retirement.

Dr. McTavish is very patient and exceptionally kind. He explains everything very thoroughly and in layman’s terms and makes sure you fully understand why he is telling you. Twice I have cried in front of him and he was so supportive it almost made me cry more. Thank goodness for him!

I did not have a good experience with Dr. McTavish at Heartland. My journey with IVF was tainted with a lack of communication and support. He was the doctor I researched and chose but I had some other doctor that came to fill in as he was overbooked. I believe I seen him twice during my stimulation but received another doctor for the rest of my IVF. It would have been courteous of him to tell me this. The Toronto doctor that I did have had poor bedside manner. When I questioned him about who he was he stated he didn’t have time to introduce himself to every client.

Secondly I was told the transfer date and the number of embroyos to transfer would be decided as a team. On day 3 I was told by the embryologist I had an hour to decide over the phone if I wanted to transfer 1 or 2 embryos on day 3 or let them grow to day 5 and risk not having any embryos at all to transfer. I was pressured and not prepared for this. After asking other women about their experience with other clinics, the doctor and embroyologist were involved. They gave recommendations with rationale prior to transfer. They also gave the embryos a grade and explained the grading system. The doctor met with them on transfer day again and discussed how many embroyos, questions, etc. It is apparent that their was a lack of support, guidance and information during my retrieval and transfer.

Thirdly, when I called regarding my pregnancy test, I was not offered a follow up appointment. I asked for one and she said you might want to take a break. This in my opinion is not right. A followup appt should be offered to talk about what happened and what options a person has. I realize the clinic is busy, but I felt used. I was put on the bottom of the list again.

I did make an appt with Dr.McTavish and he recommended the same treatment. I told him my concerns and he stated that the clinic is very busy and he is getting ready to retire. I strongly DO NOT recommend this clinic.

Focused too much on IVF as the go to. Treats the symptoms, not the cause. We were told the chances of us conceiving on our own were little to none. Only one ultrasound was ever done with no advice on supplements that could help or delving into our results where hormone levels needed improvement. Started taking B12, Vitamin D and folic acid for both myself and hubby. A month later we were pregnant, after 3 years of no success. Do your research, don't trust doctors that are in it for the money, they are going to recommend what's most profitable for them. When I inquired about alternatives to ivf all I was provided with were the cons. Very disappointed in our Winnipeg options for fertility health. A naturopath is probably the best bet for getting real help with unexplained fertility. There's always something that's off and until you find it ivf is unlikely to work anyway. Don't waste your time and money. Although Dr. McTavish comes across as a very kind man we felt very brushed off with no real insight into what could be wrong. My family doctor is the one who found I was low in B12. Ask for all possible tests before you consider ivf and get the printouts so you can do your own research. Unless you have real medical issues like endometriosis or pros, you don't need ivf.

Fabulous! attentive, knowledgeable - very surprised to see a few negative comments on this rating page - Dr. McTavish is a very caring doctor with a lot of experience and knowledge. I guess its like everything though -- sometimes the right doctor just clicks with you.
