I found him odd. In books etc his knowledge seems good but in practice I found him absolutely useless. I saw him for over a year after seeing other staff of his. He never once asked me how I was. He didn't discuss my problems and was terribly dismissive and showed me the door when I tried to bring up some stress I was having difficulty with. He failed to organise or even mention counselling which was recommended for me to get after having been in day hospital immediately prior to seeing him. A typical appointment would be "so what are you doing in orchestra", I'd name the symphony and then he'd just give me a 30 minute lecture about the composer! When applying for disability access scheme to college, I was told I had to put down ASD which I don't have (I've an old misdiagnosis). I said no, I wanted to put "depression" as this was my main issue and also physical disability as I'd an undiagnosed problem with my wrists which the OT had kindly assessed and recommended laptop for school for. He was reluctant and insisted I put ASD saying that unless I accept that, I can't get any accommodations for my physical issues in college (which was untrue). He never told me when I would get discharged due to age and when I did, I was never informed that I was discharged. It turned out he also decided in my notes that I was "fine" and he never actually diagnosed my depression. When I tried to get into adult services (which should have been automatic) I was turned away because he wrote that there was no need and that I'd no signs of depression despite my history! And this was after he'd discharged me. The neglect he put me through did irreversible damage.
That said, my brother with ASD went to him and my brother developed extreme fatigue and Dr Holmes was adamant it wasn't psychological, he had ME, a real physical condition and needed time out of school so that was helpful as people with ME are often not believed, dismissed as "psychological". In short, he seems to have academic intelligence but not social intelligence.
