I have been going to Lubbock Family Medicine for two years. I loved my doctor, Michael Mendez, but I went to their walk in clinic last week and saw Jamie Stice, NP for the first time. I take good care of myself and only went in because I had a cold, infection, or whatever virus has been going around. Also, I make a list of all my symptoms in the waiting room to make it easier on them. Every time I've ever gone there, Dr. Mendez would give me a shot and prescribe antibiotics. Well, Stice didn't even want to give me a shot at first! She actually told me that I just needed to "take some Dimetapp". I (still being friendly) told her that I had just purchased a home and have a big sales meeting coming up and I couldn't afford to stay sick for so long. She said she wasn't going to prescribe an antibiotic, and when I asked, she said I couldn't request one! I was pretty close to requesting another doctor, and I guess she could tell because she immediately said "No. You know what, I am going to go ahead and give you our miracle shot." She said it had B vitamins and an antibiotic in it. Well I went home somewhat unsatisfied but figured I would give it a chance and two days later, I was sicker than before! So I called them, initially to see what they could do for me. The staff said that no matter what I would have to pay another co-pay to be seen again for the same thing they didn't treat properly. At that point I asked to complain. I was transferred to another NP (not who I think would be the one to field complaints) who acted like I was being irrational. Mind you, I was coughing the whole time over the phone because I was so sick. I asked why she didn't do what Dr. Mendez had always done (and it always worked) and she said, "well if you have a virus, antibiotics won't work anyway." I told her that I knew this, and it was irrelevant since she had given me an antibiotic shot already. Also, I'm asthmatic and coughing like that puts a huge strain on me, but she didn't care. She was mad that I complained about her friend. At one point she said, "well unless you have strep throat, we don't typically give antibiotics." Stunned, I said, "you only give antibiotics for strep throat?" and she said no (what?!). At that point, still coughing my head off and obviously frustrated, I said "well from now on, I'll make sure I only see Dr. Mendez and not bother with you nurses anymore!" and hung up. A week later, I get a letter (via certified mail) that Lubbock Family Medicine will no longer serve me. No reason given in the letter, and when I called today to speak with Justin Cogburn (the office manager and person who signed the letter), the woman told me that he "won't be here until sometime next week." Is this really how they want to treat people??? I hope Dr. Mendez moves to a better facility, because he is not to blame for some uppity nurses.
