I trust my feet and my life in his hands... the team of doctors I was introduced to at the Valley Hospital when I woke up, had already saved my life. Dr. Edward R. Nieuwenhuis Jr. was part of that team and I hold him and his colleagues in the highest respect. I will see no other podiatrist...ever. He and his staff are very warm and professional people.

I had a very difficult surgery. Dr Nieuwenhuis was awesome. He explained everything, was patient since it took until my third visit to decide to do the surgery. His office staff was great!

Just came back from my second appointment with him. Bedside manner could use some help. I have a foot cast and he walks into the room making no eye contact and immediately grabs my foot and says “what part of no pressure don’t you understand” I was shocked by the crudeness out of nowhere. He made that initial assessment, implying and assuming I walked on it at home, all from watching me struggle with my crutches to walk into his crowded office and TINY waiting room that was full. I was struggling with crutches walking in. Sorry I had a hard time and must have tripped up and lowered my foot. How’s that my fault? Why are you yelling at me? He condescendingly said “do you need lessons on crutches.” No I don’t. And he didn’t offer these “lessons” during my first visit so he was obviously being mean.

Then he continued to tell me I probably made no progress because I didn’t listen to him. I said “so you don’t think it’s better” and his tone got louder and he said “probably not if you’ve been walking on it!!” Thanks really hopeful there doc, and frankly an insult to me. Nobody wants my foot to heal more than me, believe that. He kept a stern look on his face as he kept my foot in his hand just negatively lectured me.

This was even before the X-ray or all even before a Hello actually. Not even a hi. Just 0 - rude really quick. As someone who suffers from and has to treat chronic social anxiety, this is not the way to establish good rapport with me personally. I didn’t know whether to be mad or upset. And I was and am still both.

So NOW we take an X-ray.... just to find out 2 bones healed up and now we’re waiting for the last two to heal. So his initial assumption and basis for yelling at me was based on....??? Emotion, anger, probably just a bad day.

He was unwilling to listen to me. I told him I hadn’t left the house in 6 days (it’s my driving foot too) and I wanted (and tried) to tell him I’ve been getting depressed on bed rest is all. There’s no possibility of me putting pressure on my foot as I can not leave. I told him during the day when I’m alone I’d need to crawl up and down the stairs for water and that’s the only time I saw him smile. Explaining my misery. Then as I’m explaining myself (and he’s wrapping up my foot anyway, I’m not holding him hostage there wasting his time) he interrupted and said “I don’t want to argue with you.” Like why would he even want too to begin with? Wait we were arguing in his mind? In my mind I was being inquisitive and talking about my experience. Perception really matters I suppose.

I do not want to go back but my mom is making me. Just to finish my last 3 week appointment. If I end up needing surgery I would reconsider against my families wishes and take a shot on a doctor in NYC. Maybe he had a bad day. Maybe I’m just 24 years old and can be easily brow beat or bullied. But he was especially rude because I wanted an air cast. After he made me explain myself he laughed and basically was like good luck. I’d rather have chronic pain in my foot than deal with his office again. And why would I allow someone who is verbally mean to me, to then do surgery on my foot?! The blonde nurse is so nice and smiley. Thankful for her.

His father (I remember him from when I was young like 7/8 years old) was so comforting, so awesome, so gentle. I like his dad. Definitely don’t like him. He’s a smart doctor but it’s a multifaceted job. I don’t feel comfortable around him at all.

Dr. Nieuwenhuis Jr. is an amazing surgeon and has such a nice way with patients. He knows what he's doing for so many different things and we are so happy with the way he's treated our family (and still does). The office staff is friendly and I always get an answer to my question even if they have to find out and call me back. Alot of my family and friends go to him. He even called me back about my daughter when he was on vacation. I can't recommend him enough.
