At 39 weeks I have decided to have a vaginal exam done on me to check for dilation. It was my first time to have it done. Never had one for my previous baby whomI delivered at 40 weeks. I asked the staff if it was necessary, told me it was recommended and that although they could not force me to put my pants down, it was totally up to me but it was "recommended". And so I have decided to give it a try after reading online that it was "not painful". Turns out I had the worst experience. When Dr Marillier did my cervix check, he did not even asked me to bear down first, he arrogantly put his fingers in roughly and in spite of me in obvious discomfort and pain, proceeded to what felt like a forever check on my cervix. On my chart he even noted that he was unable to do a membrane sweep, which we haven't even discussed prior if I wanted it or not. I felt like the appointment was rushed and the doctor was rough for the internal exam for sure. I'm not sure now if I would like it to be done again if it was just "recommended" but not "necessary". (Note: He was not my primary OB and was just covering for my OB for my weekly appointment)
