Hi,
I am Reema Ferreira a woman in her early 40s.

Some background about me:
I am a thyroid cancer patient since 2010 and have had 3 recurrences of this cancer.

I was advised of getting dry mouth issues as my salivary glands in my cheeks on either side would be blocked and stopped working.
As a long-term side-effect of thyroid disease treatment with Synthroid, I had started to clench my teeth since 2016. I had been on Synthroid for 6 years by then.
I had one or two cavities since that time and had been clenching my teeth badly since 2019, leading to multiple filling replacements for my molars at the back of my mouth on the lower molar back teeth.
In early 2021 my dentist informed me that I need to use a night guard, After about 3 weeks of the night guard usage since March 2023, I started to notice gum swelling jaw pain and more clenching. My dentist sent me to Dr. Kevin Li for a root canal assessment.
When Dr. Li saw me, he made me aware that I have a very acute case of bite issues and that I will need to be referred to Dr. Lea who is a specialist in bite issues.

Healing Completely from teeth grinding due to dental errors:
Dr. Lea saw me and after reviewing my history was quite saddened with the mouth and teeth issues I had been facing. He was so good with his bedside manner and knew exactly what was going on. He not only pointed out to me what the issue was, but also showed me and educated me on how to notice the different impressions which tell you where the bite issue may be arising from. He used a special kind of thick paper blue in color to note the pressure points when the teeth grinded and then a special kind of red paper in color to note the areas of the teeth which were causing the planes to be higher or lower than normal. With this examination, he was able to do a dusting procedure with a very fine mini drill to dust off the areas of the teeth to get an even bite. He then removed my existing fillings and replaced them with amalgamated fillings which would last for more than a decade. He mentioned to me that the White Acrylic fillings will be of no use and that I would have to come back in 2 years or so, versus the amalgamated filling which was a mix of mercury and probably some white material, was a more stable one and lasts for 10 + years.

After the first treatment, I was advised to not wear the splint and to come back in a week’s time. At the second appointment he made minor adjustments, as the mouth muscles and teeth adjusts itself since the first appointment. After which he checked the bite and it was clinically accurate to the results he wanted as well as felt accurate to me too. He would not accept any diagnosis he made until I would agree that it was good. After which, he mentioned to me that I am done and will not have to do any more adjustments or even need a splint anymore. The unconscious grinding was noted only one night in the last week and these past few days, I haven’t had much teeth grinding issues which I am consciously aware of.

I can definitely say that from a dental perspective, I am healed from the bite issues and it has helped me tremendously in terms of reducing the instances of grinding my teeth.

Advocating for Dr. Lea’s bite method:
We were 6 patients in the cohort taking treatment under guidance of Dr. Kevin Li and treated by Dr. Lea.
Dr. Lea was instructing and Dr. Kevin was learning from him. It was insightful for all of us.
One patient who had been diagnosed wrongly by her dentist, had been given zirconia fillings which caused more damage and Dr. Lea had to only correct the bite issues to find out that the patient had not needed a hard filling and that it was causing more damage that helping her case.
Another patient had been informed by her dentist that she needed a crown, after a few months, the dentist said her crown needs to be replaced and now again she needs to get the same crown replaced. Insurance only covers 1 crown for 5 years span, so she had to pay $2000 and now again is required to replace the crown which will be costing her $2000 per her dentist. However when she went to Dr. Lea, he resolved her bite issues and informed her that she does not need a crown.
So all of these wrong diagnosis by the dentists of this day and age who are doing the whole diagnosing process in a wrong manner or don’t know better.
I’d say we advocate and petition for Dr. Lea’s method, so that it gets sanctioned by the BC College of Physicians and Dentistry and then allow him to teach young dentists and dental helpers of the bite and how the diagnosis can be done and patient treatment, so as to help patients with their basic dental issues and not giving them wrong complex diagnosis, which causes more grief to the patients.
I hope you will join me in helping and advocating for Dr. Lea

Thanks!
Reema Ferreira

Excellent staff & wonderful dentist! It does feel like a family practice.
No bells & whistles so the price for dental work is more reasonable.

We are like a family at Dr. Lea's office and we treat our patients like family. We work very hard to be able to see dental emergencies in a timely manner. Our primary goal is to give the best treatment as we would to our own family. We do our best to serve even under the huge pressures we are under. Everyone that works in this office does so with the utmost respect to our patients. And the beautiful gardens always welcome you.

I took my 3 yr old son in for his first dentist experience and it was the most supportive experience a parent could ask for! Epic team. Great with kids. Non mainstream/conventional views of dentistry which I love. Heart based work

Ironic that person who never went to Dr. Lea gets the top spot on this list. I travel from Victoria, taking a day off every time, to get the privilege of his know how and care. He solved a very tricky bite problem that nobody else could. I love that he thinks out of the box. He's ahead of the curve. Not an easy place to be at times. Thx you Dr. Lea for doing so for your patients and the younger generation of dentists coming up. You rock as does your amazing garden.
