I visited Dr. James K. Liu last year for a brain tumor. He said that because you are obese, you should have bariatric surgery before brain surgery. I underwent bariatric surgery based on his advice. A few months after the bariatric surgery, an MRI of the brain showed that the tumor had grown. I underwent brain surgery with another neurosurgeon, and the pathology result showed the tumor was cancerous. I received two months of high-dose radiation therapy followed by six months of intensive chemotherapy. I am currently losing significant weight and am vitamin deficient. My health is in serious jeopardy, which has my care team extremely concerned about the side effects of bariatric surgery.
I DO NOT RECOMMEND DR. LIU.

Sloppy arrogant careless dr liu left me with a severely deformed forehead and nerve damage to my ear. In my opinion He is the worst surgeon alive. Obviously could care less about the day to day outcome of another human being.

After experiencing severe headaches for an extended period of time i was diagnosed with a Meningioma In June 2021 Dr Liu performed a craniotomy where he successfully removed the tumor. The tumor type and coverage was exactly what he suspected and his comprehensive knowledge in this field is phenomenal! I had met nurses and doctors from other hospitals who know his work and told me I’m in the BEST hands. Dr. Liu is kind, patient, and personable, one of the finest doctor I’ve ever met. I’m 3 months post-op, headache free and back to my normal routine all thanks to Dr Liu and his team!

Earlier this year, my 71 year old father went for a routine physical and that is where our journey began. During this process, we became aware of a pretty significant tumor (1.9x1.9x2.9cm)in his brain that is pressing on his optic chiasm (potentially losing his vision) that was initially identified as craniopharyngioma from the first neurosurgeon. As a family, we worked together to make sure my dad had the right care with the right surgeon(s). Luckily, my sister researched and stumbled upon Dr. Liu on the internet, then on LinkedIn to which he was and has continued to be extremely responsive to my fathers care (3 weeks post surgery). As my father resides in Arizona, traveling to New Jersey was the least of our worries as long as my fathers health was in the right hands. After an initial consult with Dr. Liu, he informed us it was in his opinion a pituitary andenoma and would be able to remove it via minimally invasive endoscopic transsphenoidal surgery. Dr. Liu provided us with the comfort and answers to our many questions. The surgery was a success and Dr. Liu kept our family informed every step of the way, even sending us a picture of our dad in post op prior to us having the opportunity to visit him. My dads surgery was on a Friday and was discharged from the hospital on Sunday. We were prepared for the worst and absolutely had the best experience with Dr. Liu. He never rushed my parents or us when he met with us or at the hospital or even after. He has provided the most genuine and sincere patient care that I have ever witnessed in a doctor. My family can not thank Dr. Liu enough for his skilled hands, his expertise, patience, his care and more importantly my dads health. You will not go wrong in having a consultation or care with Dr. Liu and I can assure you, you will be well taken care of before, during and after your appointments. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU Dr. Liu!!!

Amazing surgeon! Dr Liu and Dr Jyung make an excellent team I am so glad and blessed to have found them and have been successfully operated on by them. On January 31st I had a 16 hour retrosig craniotomy for a 3cm acoustic Neuroma. I am so glad got a second opinion and met them. My surgery was successful, my facial nerve is 100% in tact, 99% of the tumor was removed, my hearing and balance nerves were compromised which was expected but I am so grateful for the outcome! Dr, Liu is very confident in his work as he should be. The incision was closed up beautifully and healing amazingly. I am 6 months post op and could not be more pleased with my results !! I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend them !!!

Dr. Liu was my first choice when deciding on a Neurosurgeon who would be capable of removing my craniophrayngioma tumor. The tumor was large, complicated and pressing against my optic chiasm. I was scheduled to have the surgery performed at a highly regarded hospital with one of those "big time" surgeons. Not sure why but for some reason everyone thinks you need to go to NYC or Philadelphia for "the best" Drs. I am hear to tell you 'The Best" Dr is right here in NJ at St Barnabas. It was just by chance someone suggested I meet Dr Liu as another option. It was the the best advice I ever received! I felt an immediate sense of comfort and relief. I just knew I was going to be ok and in the best hands possible. Dr Liu along with Dr Hsueh together performed a flawless surgery,(transphenoidal approach). Dr Liu and his team are remarkable in expertise, skill, compassion, communication, bedside manner and over all caring. I consider Dr Liu a "diamond in the rough" and a gift that our paths crossed! Thank you Dr Liu for restoring my health and caring for me as if I was family.

Dr Liu saved my life. His skill and passion as a surgeon is second to none. He was informative, calm and caring as he described to me the procedure to remove my brain tumor. Even though my surgery lasted 13 hours he stayed the course and did a fantastic job. Follow up the last three years has been excellent. So thankful he was recommended to me!

A true partnership: Both Dr Robert Jyung and Dr. James Liu

I was diagnosed with an acoustic neuroma and shopped around for a doctor who I wanted to work with to determine the best course of action to address the tumor’s growth.

As soon as I met Dr. Jyung, an experienced otolaryngologist, I was comfortable with his pragmatic approach to watch the tumor’s growth and his recommendation for its removal, instead of radiation. His note-taking was impeccable and his explanations were informative. However, his description of and trust in his partner, Dr. Liu, was most impressive and convinced me to choose them as my doctors.

I met Dr. Liu, who was both personable and professional, and exuded a great passion for his work. That’s what I liked the most about him. So, I scheduled surgery on November 20, 2017. He performed a microsurgical resection to remove @ 97% of the tumor in trade-off of preserving 100% of the facial nerve. Although I have lost most of my hearing in the ear affected by the tumor, I do retain some.

Both doctors’ credentials are impressive, as well as their years of experience. They come highly recommended!
