Absolutely awful! Had his mind made up without even listening to the patient. He is 100% the single worst doctor I’ve met. He is has zero facial or voice expression and has no understanding of mental health at all. Disgusting excuse for a doctor.

I saw Julian Hughes for about over a year, and during that time he didn't really do anything about my treatment, and we struggled to see eye to eye. (I have Bi-Polar type 1)

My medication needed changes, and he refused to work with me. After still getting chronic pain from taking the Paliperdone injection from another doctor in the (NT), he failed to give me the care I deserved. (Don't ever get the injection, and don't take any meds related to Paliperdone, it will ruin your brain, and damage your nerves if not careful)

He also asked odd questions unrelated to my illness during sessions and he really didn't seem to care about my mental health or wellbeing, just making sure I saw him once a month so he could get paid.

After I went into the Melbourne clinic voluntary for more my chronic pain in my lower legs (Akathisia) or a form of (Restless leg syndrome) He put me under a traumatic 'Treatment Order' (Which I didn't know existed or knew that doctors had such power) which worsened my condition severely.

This Treatment order is something with people that have mental health should be aware about. If you make your doctor angry, or you get into a disagreement like I did. They have the power to put you on certain orders that allow doctors to have FULL CONTROL over your medication and so called 'treatment'. (Just drugging you up and seeing how you go, not caring about side effects or wellbeing, ect.)

Meaning they could have put me onto the injection dose full time or any other drug they deemed worthy for my mental health, which means I have no say into the matter. This is breaching my human rights, and certain legislation needs to be changed IMMEDIATELY!

We had an argument about my treatment, and after I left the meeting and nurse approached me and said I had to take Seroquel 4 times a day.

This was not discussed prior to our meeting, so when I saw him walking down the corridor and approached him about it, and we have another meeting. We got into another argument about it, and without me really knowing, he said he was kicking me out of the hospital that we pay heaps for each month and he was sending me to a foreign hospital.

Totally unprofessional and unreasonably people like this should not be working in the mental health sector! They worsen people's symptoms like mine even to suicide, and you wonder why Australia has a high suicide rate, it's because of so called 'TREATMENT' and doctors like this that abuse their power, and treat mental patients like they did back in the day.

I stress and echo the poor views on this doctor. He is cold, calculated & doesn't care for his patients at all. We are just another number on his books, another paycheck, another dollar. I got put under a 6 month treatment order which was beyond unnecessary and got kicked out of the Melbourne clinic.

Upon entering the Royal Melbourne John Cade Unit, my mental health condition worsen, and was abused by nurse and security guard there. They laughed as they injected me with a drug viva injection against my will, even though they knew I had a traumatic history of 'Akathisia'.

One of the security guards even gave me a 'weggie' after they all forced me against my will, terrible extra memories I have to live with, thanks for that guys.

This was all started by Julian Hughes, and I know I am not the only one to be 'mistreated' in the Victorian Mental Health system.

Doctors like Julian should not EVER have the power that they have over us. It is an abuse against our human rights, treating us like caged animals and mistreating us like so.

Please please do not waste your time or money on this pathetic excuse for a psychiatrist. He is only interested in your money and has zero empathy or concern for your mental health. He is by far THE WORST psychiatrist I have ever seen and he should seriously consider a career change. I severely doubt he has ever in his career helped a patient to achieve a positive state of mental health. He is rude, arrogant and has extremely very little regard for his patients at all. This man should be de registered and not allowed to practice as he is far more harmful to your mental health then he is ever helpful. Julian for the sake of positive mental health and to give your poor current patients any chance of recovery retire and stop inflicting your complete incompetence on others. You truly create more trauma than you do cure it.

I unfortunately was admitted under Hughes at the Melbourne Clinic in 2018 for PTSD. He was extremely rude, asked me what PTSD was (even though he knew that’s why I was being admitted, brushed me off and told me that my trauma and insomnia was something I “just had to learn to live with as it’s not going away”. He was constantly late (came to see me at 10pm once) and just an all round awful doctor, if you can even call him that. I wouldn’t recommend him at all, you’re honestly better off staying home than being admitted under him. Completely useless.

No personality and did not appreciate me asking questions. He was not interested in my awareness to my body. Not at any stage did he discuss my diet, nor did he test my body for levels of cortisol, vitamins, hormones, alkaline. Nor did he ask why I was seeing him. Psychiatry only medicated the symptom not the cause. Waste of time and money. "Private" psychiatry that works in public sector.

Always a bit late. Does cancel sometimes. Hard to get an appointment without 3-4 week gap. But he has been very helpful to me. Pushes a bit. Quite human.

Having undergone ETC's as an inpatient I found the treatment itself useful. While that's about as far as I went with Dr Hughes, having changed doctors, I found his follow-up consultations ECT centric and lacking in any actual physiological exploration. His consultations were also consistently conducted after 10.30pm (11.15pm on one occasion) which demonstrated a lack of respect and genuine empathy especially for someone who had undergone treatment that day. I felt like an ECT experiment and basically got tired of chasing him down for consultation. Maybe his private patients receive far better attention however I was not prepared to find out. I hope this is an isolated experience and someone else can provide positive feedback.
