Note: This is not a critique of Dr. Epstein's knowledge.
In 2022 Dr. Epstein treated my daughter who is a level 10 Gymnast for persistent foot pain related to an injury she sustained doing gymnastics. MRI indicated significant damage to the ankle ligaments and physical examination was consistent with an unstable ankle. However the location of the pain was posterior near the calcaneocuboid joint. Dr. Epstein's opinion was that the pain was related to excessive movement of the unstable ankle. A modified brostrom procedure was performed which successfully stabilized the ankle. Recovery and rehabilitation of the foot were unremarkable. However, upon returning to gymnastics my daughter immediately complained of pain in the same location. Dr Epstein ordered an MRI of the 4th metatarsal and TMT joint. Results were negative and my daughter was given NSAID pain relievers and told to work through it. We responded back that the NSAIDs were not working and I asked if a CT of the foot could be performed. I was told it was unnecessary and the the previous MRI indicated there were no issue. She should try to work through it. It was clear Dr Epstein was no longer interested in working through this issue. My daughter tried for a year but could not successfully make a full return due to the continued pain. I finally went to a doctor at the Hospital for Special Surgery in NYC for another opinion. Without me asking, the first thing he did was an in office CT of both feet. 5 minutes later he came in and examined my daughter who showed him where the pain was. He pulled up the CT scan and showed us where my daughter had sustained a displaced avulsion fracture of the the cancaneocuboid joint right where the pain was and that the associated bone remodeling was impinging on the joint. He then ordered an unltrasound guided intra-articular injection of the joint with lidocain to confirm his suspicion. For the first time in two years my daughter was pain free for the duration of the anesthetic pretty much confirming the diagnosis. My daughter is now schedule for surgery to have the bone fragment removed. Where Dr. Epstein dropped that ball was not listening to the patient who continued to have persistent pain in the same location even after surgery and recovery, then denying an additional test that could have easily identified the root cause. My daughter lost 2 years of development and competition and stands to lose another 6 months with this follow up surgery. Not sure whether it was his ego or whether Dr Epstein was concerned about his misdiagnosis of my daughters pain but unfortunately my daughter suffered the consequences. If you are a new patient to Dr. Epstein, you might want to take my daughters experience into account. I think he is a great surgeon but question his diagnostic skills and post surgical behavior.

In my experience, Tri-County Orthopedics is terrific. They are always helpful with questions, prompt at getting patients in and out of appointments, and provide unparalleled care in the area. Dr. David Epstein operated on me for a broken ankle, and 10 weeks later I'm running again with no complications. He is an incredible doctor who always puts the patient's needs first.

Dr Epstein performed my ACL reconstruction surgery. With his help and expertise, I was able to return to restricted baseball in 3 months and he made it possible for me to continue my career in college. Thanks to a quick recovery process and his guidance in terms of pt and recovery options, I am now fully cleared 29 weeks after my surgery. I would recommend Dr Epstein to anyone with an ACL injury because he will give them the best chance at a quick and healthy recovery.

Dr Epstein did my son's ankle surgery, inserting plates and screws to repair a football injury. He was great throughout. He set expectations every step of the way and explained things in terms we could understand. We'd highly recommend him.

My husband slipped on the ice in Colorado and two days later when we got back we saw Dr. Epstein. He had fractured his upper arm and it was slightly out of alignment with the shoulder. Dr. Epstein never examined my husband or had him take his shirt off. He just looked at the x-ray from Colorado and said we're going to take a conservative approach. He told him to just use the sling by keeping his wrist in it and let gravity take over and to call his P.A. next week to take x-rays. A few days later we went to Summit Medical Group where they physically examined him, took x-rays and a CAT scan and said that surgery was needed. Now the arm was dislocated from the shoulder like an ice cream cone that doesn't have the ice cream sitting properly in it. You could even see his bone pushing against his skin. I'm sure that when we got an appointment with his P.A. and he took xrays he would have seen this but why did my husband have to go through all this pain and further dislocation of the bones? This could have been avoided.

I had torn my peroneal tendon and was going to HSS in the city however it was getting very pricey as they were out of my network. Dr. Epstein was in my network and local so I was hoping for the best. Unfortunately when I got to his office he cut me off as I was talking, spoke over me and tried pushing PRP on me. Since I had done a lot of research and had tried shockwave in the past with good results I asked him about it, he told me that he didn't know much about it or any other alternatives and that was that. I also had gone to Dr. Epstein so that I could get a script for an MRI. It took over 10 days to get the results and when I got the call to go over it - the person I was speaking to was an inexperienced PA who had just started at the practice and could not answer basic questions. My doctors at HSS are much more knowledgable, polite, listen and are not trying to sell any one specific modality regardless of whether or not it will help the patient. My advice is to steer clear of this doctor!
