I saw Dr. Miller a few years ago when he had just opened his own practice and was still quite inexperienced - your mileage may vary. That said, I did not find his "evidence-based" approach very helpful. He was big into "psycho-education." He jumped to conclusions on diagnoses and then immediately gave me a rehearsed lecture on the topic. (E.g. I mentioned lying in bed unable to sleep because I was worried about something and I noticed that my heart rate was super high. He immediately jumped to "panic attacks" and gave me a lecture on how panic attacks were easily treatable - I'd just have to trust that I was not going to die. Um... I never thought I was going to die nor did I say anything to that effect. ) Psycho-babble aside, his general "goal-oriented" approach did not work for me either. He wanted me to come up with a sequence of small goals to work towards. Sounds great in theory, but - if I had a specific achievable goal in mind, I wouldn't need a psychologist. Alas, wanting "to be happy" is not an actionable goal and I did not know what it would take for me to achieve it, let alone to motivation to go experiment.
