Biography
Dr. Roland Torres comes to The University of Miami from Stanford University by way of a brief stint in Alaska. He was born in Peru, is fluent in Spanish and has been educated both abroad as well as at The Univ. of Chicago and MIT. He trained in Neuropathology and General Surgery at Columbia University later moving to the West Coast to complete his training at UC-Davis for Neurosurgery with Julian Youmans and J.Paul Muizelaar, UC-San Francisco for combined Neurosurgical Oncology and Radiosurgery Fellowship with Phil Gutin and Charles B. Wilson and finally, UCLA for Complex Spine Instrumentation Fellowship with J.Patrick Johnson and Don Becker. He is also retired from the United States Air Force Reserve (Medical Corp). Dr. Torres is a Nationally recognized Neurotrauma and NeuroCritical Expert who is very engaged with the AANS/CNS Section on Neurotrauma and Critical Care as well as the National Neurotrauma Society often invited to lecture or moderate Scientific Symposia. He will be joining a major new effort at UM/Jackson Health to improve the outcome of acute Traumatic Brain Injury by applying therapeutic advances pioneered at Jackson Memorial/Ryder Trauma Center. This effort will include state of the art Neuro-Intensive Care for acutely Brain injured patients in the Jackson Health System which already provides an Internationally recognized Center of Excellence for Spinal Cord Injuries and Rehabilitation. Dr. Torres also has vast experience in the practice of General Neurosurgery both Brain and Spine which he enjoys here in Miami. Dr. Torres’ clinical research aims to deliver the most advanced care for patients with severe traumatic Brain Injuries. He has been a co-investigator in several NIH trials and a co-PI in the NIH, Neurological Emergencies Treatment Trials at Stanford. He is also working closely with industry and currently developing several innovative monitoring technologies including cerebral oxygenation, hyperbaric oxygenation, cerebral blood flow monitoring and non-invasive measurement of intracranial pressure. Current research is identifying specific blood Bio-markers that predict future Neurological and Psychological sequelae and investigating new pharmacologic treatments following mild to severe brain trauma allowing earlier targeted intervention. Future planned research will involve the use of stem cells in the treatment of severe traumatic brain injury ( TBI). In his spare time, Dr. Torres enjoys fast motorcycles, fast cars and flying.

Dr. Torres is a very knowledge Dr that will take care of you as a family member not as a number. He'll never give up on you and he'll take the time to explain your condition and what is the best treatment for you. I do have some complications and he'll really took the time to find out what was. I'm very grateful to find him and his staff is very friendly as well
