I saw Dr. Mathern for a second opinion regarding my ruptured cervical disc at C6-7. It was severe, causing spinal cord compression, and he recommended surgery. However, he only recommended anterior cervical discectomy with fusion. I was only interested in an artificial disc replacement and he had a number of reasons why this was a bad choice. Well, a little over one year out and now my adjacent disc following ACDF has ruptured. Wish I had talked to someone else who would have done a replacement.

I highly recommend this doctor. I had unsuccessful surgery with another neurosurgeon which has caused several months of living in pain. After Dr. Mathern reviewed all of my images and results from another surgeon, he accurately diagnosed me and suggested another surgery. I was nervous to move forward since I had a bad experience before but his staff reassured me that he is not one to offer surgery unless absolutely necessary. I decided to go through with it and am so thankful I did. He was so spot on with his diagnosis and surgery was absolutely my only option. He has been very realistic with me but given me every chance to a full recovery. I am finally functioning without pain and not on any pain pills. I have not felt this good in almost a year. I would recommend him to any of my family and friends!
