I am very pleased with the care I have received from Dr Tang. After being diagnosed with retinal detachment, Dr Tang saw me that afternoon and operated on me the next day. Due to Dr. Tang's diligence, my retina is now in good shape.

I am very pleased with Dr. Tang. I was referred to him after I had cataract surgery. One of my
cataracts broke off being removed. Dr. Tang operated to get the remaining parts of the cataract removed from my. He was excellent along with his staff, and conferred his treatment with me in a very knowledgeable manner.

My husband had a spontaneous retinal detachment... he literally woke up one morning with half of his field of vision in one eye gone. He saw his regular eye doctor , who immediately scheduled an appointment for that afternoon with Dr Tang. She told us he was an excellent surgeon, but his bedside manner was very business like and not " warm & fuzzy " . Dr Tang's staff had fit us in as an emergency that day ( which I am sure may have made some other routine visits run later ), but he was very thorough and explained in great detail what had happened and how it should be treated . He scheduled surgery for the next morning and we began the process of twice a week, then weekly followups.
The doctor's policy of having a family member or caretaker accompany the patient is both necessary due to dilation and exam , as well as an excellent healthcare practice. I was an important part of the treatment team , not just designated driver for the dilated . The patient is often overwhelmed by the whole process and it can be difficult to remember everything that is being communicated during the course of a visit. Having an " active listener " present made it easier for us to work with the doctor and his staff. It can be devastating to experience a retinal tear or detachment ...in the immediate post surgery period, my husband's vision in the operative eye was 20/400 - he could not even see the largest E on the eye wall chart . We were encouraged by Dr Tang and his staff to be patient and given reasonable expectations for recovery. When he experienced double vision, we were referred to the top specialist in the area who worked with Dr Tang to help correct the strabismus with prisms in his glasses . When a cataract developed, again we were referred to a highly regarded specialist .
Dr Tang was wonderful about communicating with all of my husband's physicians. During the initial treatment, both his PCP and his optometrist received written followup on every office visit. As other ophthalmic specialists were added , all treatment notes were shared with all providers, and we received a copy by mail as well . This is very rare and illustrates the thoroughness of care and follow thru Dr Tang provides . It prevents both duplications of services, errors due to lack of communication and decreases medical costs .
We were also encouraged at every visit to ask questions and to call the office at any time with questions or concerns .
As a health care provider, I feel the office policy regarding cell phone usage is both prudent and necessary. The office is small and the noise would be distracting as well as potentially hazardous . If one would consider the doctor concentrating on an in office procedure, such as a laser treatment , only to be startled by the loud ring of someone's cellphone --- the results could be harmful to the patient . It is only common sense to limit and restrict cell phone use. The problem is that people do not always think sensibly and the reminders are valid ones.
It has been almost five years since we first met Dr Tang. Since that time, we have become quite fond of him , as well as grateful for his care and expertise . I am thankful for his skills and for the kindness he has shown our family . I would refer him to anyone without a moment's hesitation.

When my Optometrist told me that I'm having a retina inflammation my left eye I was totally stunned. My first thought was I'm going to be blind and it scared me like nothing in my life. She told me to go right away to see a retina specialist and she highly recommended Dr. Tang in Natick, MA. That's what I did six months ago and today I'm so glad I did it. He is a real professional, very direct and thorough. The very first diagnosis worked well and my eye is healing well, so I found him to be very knowledgeable. His staff is nice an helpful.

I was referred to Dr. Tang for treatment of Diabetic Retinopathy and Macular Edema. I did my homework - he is the best in this field. His knowledge and expertise far exceed any flaws in his personality. I have seen Dr. Tang several times, sometimes for only a few minutes other times for much longer. He spends the time necessary. Ask his staff; they will tell you he has very high expectations of them. But, they stay because they respect him and know he is the best at what he does.

I have had detached retinas in both my eyes, requiring PPV surgery. The first time, I was at a routine check up with my eye doctor who discovered a large tear. It was about 4:30 in the afternoon. He called Dr. Tang's office immediately and I had an appointment 45 minutes later at 5:15. Some of his staff stayed late so that he could see me. Now, two surgeries later in the span of about 2 - 1/2 years and about 20 visits later, I think Dr. Tang is a miracle worker. I can understand the frustration about the wait times as I've experienced same, but it's his standard practice to give you a brief eye exam every time and to dilate your eyes, which takes more than a few minutes to take effect. As someone who had to see him on an emergency basis twice, I appreciate that I was able to see him, even if that made everyone's experience less enjoyable due to an unplanned patient squeezing in. I can also empathize with the other reviews criticizing Dr. Tang's bedside manner. However, I never found him rude or loud. Instead, he was very brief in answering questions. I thought the diagrams he showed were helpful, a picture is a thousand words. Having a retinal tear is a very stressful incident, and yes, I wish Dr. Tang's manner were warmer, but he seemed to spend a lot of time examining my eyes, going over them again and again. I'd rather have him double check the inside of my eye than spend time answering my questions. Dr. Tang actually has a dry sense of humor and is a caring, compassionate doctor, which unfortunately does not come through on the first, second, or even third visit. But, after 20 visits, it's clear to me that it's there. His office is spare, cramped even. He clearly is not spending money on his office space, hopefully he is spending it on his staff and the equipment. Regardless, I did not find the signs prohibiting cell phone use to be rude or offensive. Having cell phones go off and people talking in that tight space would be incredibly disruptive. Sadly, I don't think people have the courtesy to not use the cell phones in exam rooms or outside the exam rooms. With the stress and anxiety of not knowing how well you could see the day after surgery, having cell phones go off next to you in the waiting area would be incredibly rude. So, those signs are made with the patient's care in mind and the efficiency of his office. How can you take offense at that. The eye doctor, actually corneal surgeon, who saw me that fateful day over two years ago and someone I've seen over 15 years is a leader in his field and well respected in the Boston community. I know he could have reviewed me to many retinal specialists, but I believe he referred me to Dr. Tang because he knows what he is doing. Don't be deterred by the other negative reviews. Yes, you'll have to wait over an hour, typically, although I've had both shorter and longer experiences. He's not going to spend much, if any time, answering your questions. Believe me, I found that frustrating but he does answer them. He just does that in a few words, sometimes in one or two sentences. He's not disrespecting you as a patient. He's got a line of patients he needs to attend to, some of whom are emergencies, so he's got to make a decision about how much time he spends answering your questions or not. If you can understand, as I have come to understand, that Dr. Tang is trying to be as efficient as possible, not deliberately rude or offensive, I think you'll be well served by a physician who truly does care and knows what he is doing.

Though Dr. Tang appears to be very knowledgeable and is educated and an expert in his field, that is all insignificant once he opens his mouth. We scheduled a 3PM appointment and weren't seen until 5:10!! I get it, he's busy, there are a lot of patients, but it's certainly not because he takes his time with each patient. We waited over 2 HOURS and he spent all of 4 minutes in the room with us. In that time, he proceeded to yell at my husband, speak down to him and at one point after my husband paused to listen to him even yelled - "DID YOU HEAR WHAT I JUST SAID TO YOU?". Never in my 35+ years of life (and believe me I have spent A LOT of time with doctors) have I witnessed or been treated the way this doctor treats his patients. If he speaks to the older patients the way he spoke to us I truly feel badly for these people. They probably think it's their fault! Additionally, the RUDE and THREATENING notes about phone calls is unnecessary! It's 2014, people have cell phones and I think they know not to use them in an exam room. Lastly, the older, tall/larger lady that sits at the desk is truly a piece of work. If she hadn't thrown her hands in the air and mumbled some frustrated words and stormed off we wouldn't have even heard from her. Unbelievable how these doctors and their teams feel they are so untouchable that they can treat people this way. I don't care how talented you are at your craft, Dr. Tang - you need a lesson in LIFE. This isn't just an appointment, we were faced with one of us LOSING THEIR SIGHT. Be a little more compassionate, people are scared and don't understand everything. We have transferred care to another practice.

This one was of the worst experiences in a doctor's office. The staff is rude, the doctor is rude, the notes on the door are rude and threatening. They don't even open the door to the office until it's your appointment time. You wait in the hallway like a stray dog.
I am not impressed with the doctor's degree from Johns Hopkins. I don't get it how he can justify this behavior because he's a genius?!?! If he has contempt for his patients how can I trust that his genius will help me. I was just another co-pay to this office. In and out like cattle. No thank you!!!! Stay away from this doctor and his office! You deserve better. You are worth more!

My wife had a retina tear and needed help quickly. Our ophthalmologist reluctantly referred her to Dr. Tang as others were not available. We were warned of his rudeness and he has lived up to his reputation and these appropriately low scores. He's fortunate that he can survive, if not thrive, only because he is a specialist that is needed immediately due to the nature of retinal tears. After the initial surgery and one follow-up, we have had enough. We've called to ask our records moved to another doctor, i.e. a decent individual. You are forewarned!
