My husband and I have waited three months before writing this review. Dr Gautsch told us that by three months he would be a distant memory in our minds. He was right…except for the fact that we are so grateful to him for the amazing job he did on my husband’s left knee. He did a total replacement and because he does a side cut instead of a cut down the front center of the knee the recovery is so much easier. No muscle cut, no tourniquet needed, no heavy sedation, done as an outpatient and you are up and walking an hour or so after surgery. Rehab is also much easier and faster.
We live in South Georgia and had heard so many good things about Dr. Gautsch that we made the 7 hour trip to Nashville (he has an office in Nashville and Gallatin) to talk to him. After meeting him, xrays being taken, and then discussing our options – we booked the surgery. We are so glad we did! My husband’s legs are unbelievably bowed. We never thought he would find a doctor to be able to fix his leg so he didn’t limp, because when you straighten one and the other is bowed…there is a difference in length.
Dr. Gautsch’s first profession was as a biomedical engineer. He was able to see what was needed and did it! Shaved the bone and lined everything up perfectly. The internal medicine doctor we use in our town had bowed legs and had knee replacement surgery on one leg. He then had to have a lift put in one shoe because they didn’t have the expertise to make them the same length. We didn’t want that.
We rented an AirBnb house for 3 weeks so we could start physical therapy with therapists who are familiar with Dr. Gautch’s type of surgery. We really didn’t have to do that but felt more comfortable doing it. Dr. Gautch’s office then sent the protocol to our local therapists and they have been able to easily follow it. They have also made known their appreciation for how much faster my husband is rehabbing than the normal knee replacement patients they have (he is 74 years old). Now he is out doing yard work, washing the cars, and generally doing what he wants to do. Not to say he is done healing because it is a work in progress and he continues to go to the gym and stay active. From what we understand, the knee will keep getting better and better for up to a year.
This is not a walk in the park! It is major surgery with careful caregiving for the first month. We have had some normal issues but Dr. Gautsch and his staff have been there for us and have checked on us to make sure all was going well when we did have questions or needs. We are so appreciative to them. Everything they told us has been spot on. We are so thankful!

Dr. Gautsch's surgical talents and personal touch was why my sister chose him for her outpatient knee replacement. She met with several area orthopedic surgeons, but after meeting Dr. Gautsch, she knew he was the one. Our family is so grateful to Dr. Gautsch and his team--for the first time in many years, my sister enjoys a pain-free life!

Even better than I remembered! I am so very grateful to you Dr. Gautch, and your wonderful therapists and staff. You’ve come through for me again! This knee replacement, surgery, and recovery was even faster and easier than I remember my other knee being. And I wouldn’t take anything for either! Your outpatient center is absolutely the only way to go. I truly can’t thank you enough for your skill and kindness. Thank you! Thank you! You’re the best!

BEWARE. Horrible, abusive billing, lack of proper care. They charged over $1k for "surgery on a broken toe", which NEVER happened, he never physically once touched or looked at any toe! ABUSIVE! Over all charged insurance over $3k to see my husband for 5 min for a broken hand (and charged over $900 to "treat the hand") to which he put a brace on it that is used for broken wrists! I called his office two days later to advise them that the brace was causing my husband MORE pain and they NEVER called me back. They don't care about patient care, they care a lot more about billing. BE CAUTIOUS when visiting, and check your statements!

Dear Dr. Gautsch and Support members of Southern Sports Medicine Institute
This is a note to express my sincere gratitude for over the top care I have received while in your care.
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. From the first day I entered your office, I was greeted with the most professional staff. I could feel the confidence in everyone that I was at the right place. Knowing you had a plan to relieve the horrible pain in my right knee was reassuring. The convenient location of the onsite MRI was a pleasant surprise.
I want to commend you and your staff for educating me on what to expect and help me prepare for the repair of my knee. I was more relaxed knowing what to expect.
The surgery and my experience with the hospital staff was just as impressive. The follow up instructions were easy to follow. Today, 2 weeks and 1 day from my surgery, finding myself much more mobile and almost my old self is refreshing.
Again thanks to everyone for a job well done. My overall experience was excellent. I will recommend your team to anyone needing Orthopedic care. You were all awesome.
Sincerely,

Cheryl Bretz

I had both knees replaced 4 weeks a part. The whole staff and PT people are great to work with. I can not thank Dr. Gautsch enough for giving me my life back. He explained everything to me before surgury and what to expect over the next 16 weeks. I am at 10 weeks from 1st replacement and all is well and just as he told me it would be. Going back to work this week with new knees that feel great! So happy to have found Dr Gautsch.
