Dr. Helm has been my spine doctor for 21 years and he is the best in the business. I have two neck/spine surgeries, one in 2002 and one in 2015. His staff is wonderful and Dr. Helm is knowledgeable as well as compassionate. I am so sad that he is retiring but wishing him the best of luck. He is irreplaceable!

I think Dr Helm is the best Dr I know, I had 3 spinal surgeries in Bristol and Johnson city and difference is like night and day ,I live 4 hours away from UVA and it is well worth the drive I wouldn't go no where else, the Doctor and his staff were so good to me, before and after the surgery I had done in December 10 2021 and I am going back this month to talk about another surgery I need done, I would not go any where else for treatment and I trust them with what ever they say I need done

I would NEVER recommend this physician. He was unprepared for the appointment. He never bothered to examine the patient...(check balance, gait, etc). He ignored our questions regarding neurological symptoms such as memory loss and aphasia. He spent less than 10 minutes in the room, most of which was looking at the computer, scrolling through the MRI images. When asked about his experience with the type of cyst that had been removed by the surgeon in the hospital, he became visibly hostile and stated "he'd been doing this for 25 years". I am disgusted and am filing a formal complaint with UVA

I wish I never met this doctor! What was supposed to be one surgery turned into 3 and a combined month of hospital stays. He screwed up and of course wouldnt admit it but instead blamed it on the fact I was overweight, how convenient. I am now suffering from issues I never had before he operated on me. I will never go back to him nor uva for that matter.

I have had three different surgeries from Doctor Gregory Helm's. I find him to be one of the most competent physicians I know. I had some additional pain after one of my surgeries and found him to be very responsive and understanding. He always keeps appointments and has suggested waiting on some surgeries event to the point that we have avoided a surgery. In my opinion he preforms surgery as a last resort which I am grateful. His staff and team deserve a 10 out of 10.

Dr. Helm gave me my life back and I will always be grateful for his help. Too bad I didn't get to him sooner as I may have been pain free the rest of my life but unfortunately after 3 other surgeries he had a difficult task but at least I can walk again. Hopefully I will meet a neuron-surgeon in TN that can help me at least with the pain. Thank you Dr.Helm. Gloria Hayes

Dr. Helm performed a L4/L5 microdiscectomy on me in Oct,2009. I was in real bad shape before the surgery and the difference was like night and day. I practically gave me my life back. I am particularly grateful to him for scheduling my surgery the on the day after my first meeting with him. It was because he had a cancellation the next day although my wife thinks it was because he saw my poor condition (I couldn't even stand straight) and squeezed me in. Either way, I am really glad he did that. 6 weeks after the surgery I feel as if nothing ever happened to me. I live in Sterling, VA and Charlottesville is 3 hours away, but if I needed advise on my back, I'd go back to Dr. Helm. His assistant, Kim Skinner is also very helpful and usually replies your email within 4 hours. Overall, I highly recommend Dr. Helm for any kind of spine/back issue. The UVA hospital is also a terrific facility with a very attentive and caring staff. I couldn't be more satisfied.
