I was in the Charlotte OBGYN practice for my first baby. I saw Dr. Makemson for a lot of my prenatal appointments, and then he ended up being the doctor on-call when I delievered. I brought up my scoliosis several times as a concern regarding epidural success and any complications that could arise during delivery. I offered to bring in x-rays of my back for both him and the anesthesiologist to look at. He continually brushed off my concern and assured me it would be no problem. Well, the day of my delivery the epidural failed, it did not work. I also pushed for hours with a nurse yelling at me that I wasn't doing it right, I was in horrible pain, and she kept putting her fingers in my lady parts and pushing down and it was hurting me but she wouldn't stop - she told me to "get angry" and "push". Well it turns out the reason the baby wasn't coming was my tailbone was in the way. Something we would have seen if anyone had looked at my x-rays. My tailbone finally broke off and the baby came out. I didn't know at the time. I had begged them to give me a c-section after hours of pushing, but they refused and told me I could do it. They kept telling me I wasn't push right (like I wasn't trying) and threatened to use pitocin or instruments to get her out - with no epidural!! Dr. Makemson was pretty much MIA the entire time I was in labor. Finally when my babies head crowned, they get a nurse midwife to come and deliver the baby. When it was all over Dr. Makemson came into the room and smugly said that all my pain would be worth it because I was recover faster from a vaginal delivery. Well guess what, the fractured tailbone takes MONTHS to heal and is extremely painful. I was not able to breastfeed my baby because I was in such severe pain and I couldn't sit, so pretty much no way to hold her and breastfeed. I cried all the time. It was an absolute nightmare. They also didn't even diagnose the broken tailbone in the hospital. I complained multiple times about being in severe pain and not able to get in and out of bed and I was made to feel like I was just making a fuss over normal after labor pain. It wasn't until we left the hospital - we stopped at an urgent care - and they xrayed my tailbone and confirmed it was broken. I got better care from the urgent care than I did at CMC main. I will NEVER go there for anything ever again.

Dr. Makemson saw me on an emergency basis when I had sudden heavy bleeding and was about to leave on a trip that could not be cancelled. (Dr. Wicker, my regular doctor, was on vacation.) Dr. Makemson expedited tests and was completely supportive in all aspects of trying to identify the cause and deal with the issue. He provided the gold standard for a doctor's responsiveness and care.

We found Dr. Makemson to be condescending and dismissive when asking very specific questions about issues with my pregnancy. Ultimately his care recommendations were on point but his bedside manner is seriously lacking.

After I delivered my last baby, I had complications. He was the doctor on call. He was cold and very arrogant. I had several questions about the procedure that was performed and he didn't answer any of them. In fact, he took out his phone as I asked one of the questions. He insulted my husband by demanding he not ask any questions. He lied about alternatives when we asked him. I would find another practice if the other doctors were not great and superior . I never want to see him again. Use him at your own risk.

I started going to Dr. Makemson after Dr. McDonald retired. I find him to be an excellent doctor. He always takes the time to talk to me and see if I have any concerns. I would highly recommend him to others.

Dr Makemson has been my doctor for several years. I have never had a doctor stand up for me and fight for me like Dr Makemson. He has been a God send for me.

Dr. Makemson was my OB during both of my pregnancies (I had gest. diabetes) and he and his nurses always answered my questions and were very caring. I have never felt rushed and have always felt comfortable with him. He has always listened carefully and given several options for all of my needs. I would definitely recommend him. And the on call nurses that work for CMC are fabulous too.

I just had a terrible experience with Dr. Makemson. He tends to be very cold and acts as though he's trying to have open dialogue, but doesn't listen to his patients. I was warned, but he was the only doctor available on the day I had to be seen. I left the office crying and will opt to deliver at another hospital altogether if he is on call when I go into labor. He really put a damper on my experience and I would consider him the worst doctor I've ever been to. Beware.

I had the opposite experience with Dr. Makemson after my miscarriage. I found his bedside manner to be less than stellar during my follow-up appt and felt rushed through the appt, despite having many questions about what happened with my first pregnancy. During my subsequent pregnancy, he was hit or miss. Sometimes he would have a great rapport and take him time, other times he was cold and rushing. I think he is a knowledgeable doctor but his bedside manner could be improved.
