I regretfully have to say that he has lost his touch. Back in February 2020, we decided to do onlays on tooth number 3, 5 and 14. However, I could not go back to him because of Covid until August 11th 2020. He wanted to work on tooth number 3 and 5 on that day, but I wanted to get the one on the left hand side done. So I asked him to work on tooth number 14 and that we could do the other two on September 14th 2020. He did an onlay on tooth number 14 on that day, but it was too low from the get go, such that the front of the tooth where he placed the onlay was not really touching the bottom tooth. I had mild discomfort and bleeding for several days after that and felt the tooth underneath number 14 chipped a little. So I went back to him on August 18th for an adjustment, where I waited for over an hour. On that day, he said that he did not work on the back side of tooth number 14th and it was not because of the restoration he recently placed that the bottom tooth chipped a little. He looked at the last x-ray that he took on August 11th and told the receptionist to make me come back as soon as possible. However, there were no availabilities before my already scheduled appointment on September 14th. On September 14th, he took out the onlay he did on August 11th, but left some part of the restoration from August 11th. This time, the height of the tooth was much better. However, I was in much greater pain than before and I was hearing clicking sounds from the tooth. The following day, a red glassine paper like substance came out from between my gums and tooth and I was in even more pain. I contacted him for emergency purposes and we met the next day. He told me that there was visually nothing wrong with it. He suggested that I go see an endodontist. At this point, I requested all of the x-rays that were taken on August 11th and September 14th. I saw the endodontist that he recommended on September 24th. The endodontist concluded that I do not need a root canal at the moment and told me to wait. However, he said that there was what he called a 'balcony' on the inner front of the tooth number 14. I was already rescheduled to meet with him on October 14th for tooth number 3 and 5, but the pain on tooth number 14 never went away and I was still hearing those clicking sounds. When I went to see him on October 14th, I told him that I still had pain on tooth number 14, I was still hearing those clicking sounds and that the endodontist told me to wait. So he just 'polished' tooth number 14 on that day to get rid of that 'balcony'. However, I was in much much greater pain the following day, more clicking sounds and on October 16th, I started to bleed a lot from behind tooth number 15. Once again, I contacted him and he told me go see an oral surgeon. Since then, I have seen the following specialists: I have seen one oral surgeon that I found on my own, and he did not find anything wrong with my gums and the surrounding areas of tooth number 14. I have seen another endodontist that also thinks that I do not need a root canal on tooth number 14. However, I have contacted a professor that has written dozens of scholarly papers on ceramic onlays. What he told me is that: 1)rubber dam isolation should be used to achieve maximal bond strength, which he did not use in neither on Aug 11th nor Sep 24th 2)the onlay that was placed on Aug 11th was a botch job because it was not cemented properly. 3)there is a special technique that is used to put an onlay on top of an onlay, if certain steps are not taken then there will be clicking sound and pain. And just yesterday, I spoke to someone that has done numerous restorations in the past. She also told me that the onlay that was placed on Aug 11th was terribly bonded. She also told me that the onlay that was placed on Aug11th does not look like a ceramic onlay from the x-rays, but looks more like a temporary onlay. At this point, I am disappointed, appalled and agitated. It is November 6th and I still have pain on tooth number 14, which I did not have before Aug 11th. I wasted so much time, money, took off so much time from work and got to know more than I needed to know about dental onlay. I am looking at my options right now and I am considering bringing legal charges.
