Dr. Tran recently performed an emergency colon resection on my father at El Camino Hospital. We thought he was just great. Not only was the surgery itself excellent--performed under duress, but very well, with no complications, and recovery going much more easily than expected--but he is just wonderful to deal with. He behaves more like a doctor than a surgeon. He explained everything he had done and was doing in detail. He was in the hospital every day and came to visit us regularly to check in. Even when he had a heavy schedule, he made a point of checking in with us by phone. (Once I asked him if he worked 7 days a week and he said, "Yes, it's great--I love it." I think he really does.) He also tried to keep my father in hospital as long as possible so he could recover more fully before being released, and as he was recovering, he ordered the hospital to eliminate early morning blood tests so he could get more sleep. I recommend him without hesitation. He is an exceptional surgeon, but he is also capable of understanding the surgery from the patient's and the family's point of view. The hospital staff was also great. As well as being kind and understanding, they administered my father's regular medications on schedule, which almost never happens in larger hospitals. Although I hope we never have to do this again, if we did, we would want it to be here, with Dr. Tran as the surgeon.
