Biography
David Smotkin, MD, PhD, is an attending physician and Assistant Professor, Obstetrics & Gynecology and Women’s Health at Montefiore Einstein. His clinical focus is on the care of women with gynecological cancer.Dr. Smotkin earned his Bachelor of Arts at the University of California, Berkeley in 1972. From 1972 to 1976, he attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, earning his Doctor of Philosophy in Biology. He then attended Yale University School of Medicine, earning his Doctor of Medicine in 1980. In 1984, he completed his four-year residency at the University of Colorado in the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He completed his three-year fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology at the University of California in 1987.Building on his clinical interests, Dr. Smotkin’s research examines all manner of clinical trials for gynecological cancer. His work has been published in peer-reviewed journals. He is also an ad hoc reviewer for several journals, including Obstetrics and Gynecology, the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Gynecologic Oncology.Dr. Smotkin is board certified and is a member of the Society of Gynecologic Oncology. In 1999, the Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology awarded Dr. Smotkin the National Faculty Award for Excellence in Resident Education.

Dr. Smotkin treated me 23 years ago when I was a 13 year old. I had stage IV ovarian cancer, a germ cell tumor which weighed almost 19 pounds, and ended up with a partial lobectomy as well as a unilateral oopherectomy. I underwent 4 different types of chemotherapy and surgery to remove the tumor. I was not suppose to survive let alone have children, and now I am the proud mother of 3 girls. Dr. Smotkin's knowledge and amazing medical practice saved my life.
