Dr. Vierra is the best in his field, bar none. He is informative, he spends time and thinks like a logician to solve medical problems/questions (I am a Computer Scientist). From the seminar to surgery, to every follow-up visit, he was forth-coming with lots of information, suggestions and encouragement. I had 100 pounds to lose, and he continually urged me on with support. I never had pain after surgery, and something important to me-he made sure CHOMP made available all my medications-other hospitals have not done that, and did not tell me they wouldn't provide all the meds until I was in a hospital bed! I recommend Dr. Vierra most highly for bariatric surgery, and wish he was a Primary care doc too! I don't know what all the talk is about his personality; to me he was kind, respectful, informative, and all I could ask for. ***** 5 Star Doctor. Paige Castle

Always on time for appts. Explains and answers questions so you are well prepared prior to surgery. Surgery was done one day and I was out the next day and feeling better than in months. the weight is coming off since my bipass and I have had no complications. His physician's assistant Diedre is absolutely the best asset to his staff. She too is knowledgeable on all fazes of the surgury and subsequent weight loss. They are both very incouraging and it has been a profound experience for me. When I talk to other gastric bipass patients who had OTHER surgeons, I am always amazed at some of the complications they have endured. I would go to no one else other than Dr. Viera and I give him the highest recommendation I can.

I actually did not see Dr. Vierra for gastric bypass, but for an abdominal tumor. He was recommended since he is so familiar with the gastro-tract. Although neither he or his partner (whom I saw initially) diagnosed my rare tumor correctly, once they did realize that I had a rare tumor, they were VERY prompt in scheduling a biopsy and then a very intensive surgical procedure. It has been one month post-op and I feel really good about the level of care that I had been given. Dr. Vierra is one of the few surgeon's in the country who is actually familiar with my tumor (desmoid)and had previously operated on them when he was at Stanford (he had to rebuild muscles in my abdomen with mesh - gross!). I do agree that his manner takes getting used to, but once you have him in the exam room or the operating table, you will receive the BEST care.

Dr Vierra is simply the best. I know that some perceive him to be aloof, or comment on his "bedside manner". I found him to be just the opposite, he is forthright and honest! I believe you get what you give...I was terrified the first visit; I let him know that and he did his best to put me at ease. He was patient with my unending questions, and answered everyone in patient (not Doctor) terms so I could truly undertand. His follow-up in the past 5 years since my surgery has been constant, supportive and taking his time to again answer any questions I may have during my follow-up appointments, as well as if I have a question on the phone (since I've moved out of state). The fact that he is adamant that proper care is taken in his office as well as the hospital is VERY appreciated. I appreciate him and the "new and longer life" he has helped me achieve.

He could work on his communication, but I believe he is a well trained surgeon. The biggest complaint I have about him is that I was not notified of a bad lab result. I had a positive H-pylori result and he nor his staff notified me. I only found out about it because I requested a copy of the lab results for another doctor. When I called him about this he seemed to make excuses and minimize my request to be treated. He would not write a simple Rx even though I just had seen him. He wanted me to pay for another appointment. I had my family doctor treat me instead. I do believe he the doctor to go to for weight lose surgery, but it may take a bit of effort on your part to get him talking.

This doctor is definitly an excellent surgeon. His special expertise is gastric-bypass surgery and the hospital he is affiliated with has been declared a Center of Excellence for bariatric surgery. There will always be discussion about his personality, but he proved to be an acquired taste in my exoerience. He cares deeply for his patients, but his demeanor is so professional and contemplative that he is sometimes percieved as aloof. He works very hard to accomplish the by-pass avoiding an open incision. It is probably much harder for him, but the patients benefit enormously by experiencing much less pain and disability.
