Asheville ENT is a disgrace. I wouldn't wish this practice on anyone.
I saw Dr. Seal in the fall. I came in complaining that I had been gradually losing my voice and growing more hoarse.
I told him that an oncologist and his wife had heard my voice at church and they noted that "you need to get that looked at, some of my patients sound like that".
I told that cancer concern to Dr Seal and he laughed it off before he'd had me open my mouth. I felt relief.
After a quick chat, he did a scope down my throat. At no time did he ask me to use my voice or make a noise while looking at my vocal chords. Not knowing any better I did not find that odd. There was very little information given or explained.
He announced that I had a nodule on a vocal chord and prescribed months of antacid and allergy meds.
After months of the med therapy, I reported my zero lack of progress and returned to the office. He repeated a scope, though this time he asked me to make sounds while he watched.
With no explanation I was referred to a specialist in Wake Forest. His arrogance was incredible.
In the meantime, I had lost all confidence due to the poor communication and lack of any sense of urgency.
I scheduled an appointment at another area ENT practice and gave them the same complaints. The doctor scoped me and had me make sounds.
Then it hit me like a thunderclap. I asked the doctor if he always had a patient try to use their voice when doing this first scope and he said "of course, you can't diagnosis a voice problem without it".
What he found was that in addition to the nodule, I in fact have one paralyzed vocal chord. Instantly visible even to me on the scope when I made noise.
I since asked 2 out of state ENT friends and both were stunned that no such thing occurred on my visit to Dr Seal. A failure of basics for a losing voice appointment.
I lost 5 months in the process. I had to have a chest CT scan to rule out cancer or other reason for the paralysis.
I now know that a paralyzed vocal chord can most certainly by caused by cancer.
I lost work productivity, money, time and a tremendous amount of stress and waiting on potential causes for the paralysis.
I have since moved on with having the nodule removed and the vocal chord filled so I can speak again.
I contacted Asheville ENT to ask for my money back for Dr Seal's careless waste of my time and health. Did not ever get the courtesy of a reply.
Stay away.
