This creep treated me at Highland for an ER endoscopy. He is condescending and makes you feel like you are lying about your symptoms. It is weird and he is just awful.

My Mother was his patient & was in the hospital & very ill & had nothing to do with him. But he found it necessary to see her in her room & tell her that he screwed up & she needed to have a test done…that it would probably kill her & that she was half-dead when she came into the hospital! He then left & vanished into thin air & I know that because I was witness to what he had just blurted out & I left the room to find him & make him a piece of wallpaper on the wall. My Mom's comment was " I may as well commit suicide" & he took the last hope of her living away from her. He is the most disgusting doctor I have ever met & wouldn't send my worst enemy to see him. Why is he still allowed to practice is beyond me….disgusting human being.

I am glad I found these comments. After my experience with Dr. Merzel today, I have been very unsure of myself (is it me? am I too sensitive, etc) but I could have written any one of these reviews. I am so glad it's not me!!! This guy is a certifiable nightmare. He found "nothing" wrong with me. Said it was in my head, but did mention I desperately needed a gastric bypass. Very helpful.

reading other reviews was like reading my own story. i have had very painful and embarassing stomach issues that were quickly dismissed by dr. merzel. he talked down to me the two times i saw him, rushed the entire visit, told me my problems were in my head, after basically begging to order tests because im in pain all the time, constantly get sick and have trouble moving around, he finally did. He might be very knowledgable but i wouldnt know based on the time he gave me. i was extremly disappointed and will be seeing a better doctor for next visit. I was ready to walk out i was so angry

Totally dismissed everything I said. He has odd manners and sees to avoid eye contact. I've suffered with stomach issues for nearly five years. I was referred to him. Even with all the previous tests that clearly showed issues with my stomach, he tried to convince me that it was all in my head and that my issues are being caused by anxiety! Patients are nothing but dollars to him. At the end of my appointment (that I waited nearly 40 mins for, all the while listening to him talk on the phone in another room about buying a car), he didn't order any tests, make a follow up appointment or even suggest ANYTHING that I could do. After seeing another doctor and getting a simple x-ray done, the new doctor found something that could be very serious. I also learned after seeing him that he mis-diagnosed a patient who ended up having CANCER. I would NOT reccomend this doctor to my worst enemy.

flat affect. difficult to interpret if he is paying attention or not. he does appear to take you seriously when your illness is cooberated with another physician, otherwise, seems to dismiss you.

I was initially reluctant to take care of my colitis properly. I give Dr. Merzel all the credit, as I wanted to avoid dealing with him whenever possible. There was always at least a 45-minute wait for him, even if the waiting room was empty. The staff would write down the wrong medicines and dosage in my phone messages. I was only able to speak to him after hours, and he always seemed very blase about my symptoms. When I raised concerns about diet, he dismissed me. Two especially bad situations: When I was scheduled for a procedure, I was waiting on the table for 45 minutes and wound up dozing off. His nurse laughed at me when she came in! Another time, after an eternal wait, he opened the exam room door without knocking, banged my 18-month-old in the head and didn't seem the least bit concerned if she was hurt! At the end of my appointments, he barely let me ask questions and would duck into his staff room so fast he actually looked like he was running away from me!

I saw Dr Merzel for recurring GI related symptoms. He ordered some tests and tried a few medications but my health continued to be poor. He was knowledgeable on GI items, though he was heavily focused on a path that ignored my input. He consistently dismissed my input as being 'irrelevant' or 'in my head' and not as potentially valuable information. He refused to share the details of the results of the tests he ordered and would provide new prescriptions with the directions to follow his advice and not worry about the reasons. I switched to a different doctor who was willing to listen and to get a new perspective. The new Dr found the test results and my symptoms indicated possible causes that had never been brought up. After a test to confirm, the new Dr discovered the presence of a serious tumor. Two surgeries later I am feeling much better. I regret not leaving Dr Merzel much earlier as I confidently believe he directly & significantly delayed the finding of a serious health issue.
