I went to the dentist with my 5 and 3 year olds. Dr. Dow pronounced my daughter's name wrong and I corrected him. Most people say sorry, repeat the name correctly, and then move on. Dr. Dow looked at her name again, arrogantly wondered to her assistant "how does that even begin to make sense", while having a disgusted look on his face. He continued to make remarks about her name to his assistant. When it was my son's turn, he kept saying how his sister's name was so difficult that he would not even attempt to say his name. He said to him "I'm not gonna even say your name!" Why would a 3 year old find that a nice thing to hear?? :( I told the receptionist what had happened. She started gathering my things together quickly. I raised the issue for the third time before she said a quick "I'm sorry about that" and hurried me off. The visit made me feel like Dr. Dow and his staff are completely culturally incompetent. Comments and behaviors like these are deeply entrenched in white supremacy and white privilege. The injuries to my children's self-esteems that Dr. Dow and his staff have caused are irreparable.

Our one year old fell and knocked his tooth loose. Our pediatrician said we needed to see a dentist. Dr Dow and his staff stayed late so that we could rush over to get our son checked out. They had to pull his tooth and they were all so reassuring and wonderful during a stressful time. They were cheerful and caring and there was no hint that they were bothered or put out by staying late for us. We were so appreciative and will be taking our son there for his regular dental care from now on!

My son was treated very well! The only thing we won't do next time is the "happy gas" when it started wearing off it made him feel really wierd... A little spendy, even with BCBS but we will be going back!
