Dr. Wada was very upset that I "would not let him do his job" because I did not want my eyes to be dilated. I felt like a child being reprimanded. He actually raised his voice to me. I had my eyes dilated about 1 year and 4 months ago and didn't feel I needed it again so soon. I am also an overall healthy person with no diseases like diabetes which might warrant annual dilation. After the exam he did give me some good advice, so I'm glad I resisted the urge to get up and leave when he was scolding me, but it was a very uncomfortable visit and needless to say I won't be going back. I would only recommend him to "good little children" who obey without question. According to the book "When Doctors Don't Listen: How to Avoid Misdiagnoses and Unnecessary Tests" by Leana Wen, M.D. and Joshua Kosowsky, M.D., "Being a good patient is not being quiet and obedient. You know yourself, your body, and your symptoms best." "It's your health, so find the courage to speak up for yourself", says Timothy Gilligan, MD.D. co-director for Excellence in Healthcare Communication.
