Similar experience to my wife's. He performed surgery on her foot for a bunion and installed a pin. When pain persisted he said he had no explanation as everything looked good on the x-ray. The wife sought a second opinion and went to Crawford Long where she met with another surgeon. He immediately saw that the pin put into the foot by Johnson was bent and needed to be replaced. When we looked at the x-ray we were able to see the bent pin ourselves and we are not trained to read x-rays. We felt Johnson should have seen the bent pin but if he did he did not share the information with my wife. He just said everything looked good on the x-ray

I would not recommend Dr. Joseph T. Johnson for anyone in need of bunion removal based on my personal experience. In May of 2016 I had a bunion removed from my left foot along with straightening of toes 2 and 3. I was impressed with my discovery visit and Dr. Johnson thoroughly discussed the procedure and the estimated recovery period. I'm satisfied with the bunion removal from my big toe, however toe 2 is no straighter then pre-surgery despite the the metallic alignment device . Toe number 3 is far worse then the pre-surgery condition and rides over the top of toe 4; it too had a metallic alignment device implanted for "straightening" purposes. Since the toe is not hurtful but does limit shoe fitment to some degree, I have not sought further corrective measures. The recovery time and the amount of pain and recovery was at least 2x Dr. Johnson's estimate. My recommendation: seek out another surgeon if you need foot surgery.

Recommended very questionable surgery to a family member. Every other specialist said to stay away like the plague. Also, the doctor is not helpful if you need information for a personal injury lawsuit, even though he was well aware that a suit was pending. After a serious injury, my lawsuit had to be dismissed because the doctor refused to write a very generic letter containing information he previously confirmed to me verbally. I would never recommend this doctor.

I suffered a distal radial fracture. Dr. Johnson was the on-call orthopedic surgeon at the hospital I went to. He arrived in golf clothes and wasn't too helpful in answering questions. Seemed like I was putting him in a bad spot by calling him in during his golf game Dr. Johnson incorrectly read my x-ray and believed it to be a clean break. He put in 2 pins and sent me on my way. 2 weeks later during a follow up, he took several more x-rays. He suddenly sent me for a CT scan. Turns out he incorrectly read my x-ray on the date of my first visit/surgery with him. It was not a clean break, but a shattered distal radius fracture. He passed me off to a hand/wrist specialist who fixed his mistake by removing the 2 pins Dr. Johnson put in. During the second surgery the new Doctor put in a plate with 7 screws and 1 pin. Be forewarned with this quack job. Get a second opinion before he performs the wrong surgery!
