Dr. Schoonmaker has been my doctor for almost a year now. He is the only doctor who has hung in there with me. My brain disorder is very difficult for me. Dr. Schoonmaker has never given up on me, He keeps trying and working with me, always coming up with different ways to help me want to stay stable. I do not mind if I have to wait as I get my fair share of time too. His new office staff are very helpful, caring and really understand how to help someone who is having a hard time. They treat everyone very professionally and courteously. His new physician director is very helpful and has so much knowledge that she actually takes the time to share with all of the patients. If you want to learn how to stay stable, have someone keep working with you on your meds and triggers, this is the doc to go to. I expect to see him as one of Texas Top Ten Doctor's in the next year!

Dr. Schoonmaker has given me kind, warm, professional treatment for almost five years. I was an unstable mess having tried multiple psychiatrists before him. He has helped me to become stable and productive. Sometimes he stays to the 15 minute allowed. However, if I am in need he spends more time with me. I am on three drugs for my bipolar but he has found the right mix for me. He is worth waiting for!

Dr Schoonmaker has been a gift to my family and me. He is one out of 25 or so psychatrist that takes the time to listen and find out what is going on with you and your family. He is very knowledgable and caring. The previous reviews where he only spends 5 minutes with a patient is a load of crap I have never been in to his office and spent less than 30 minutes with him even though the appointment is for 15 minutes. Other psychatrist's that I have been to have taken only 10 minutes and wrote me a handful of scripts, not Dr Schoonmaker. He is very detailed about the information that you give him and very upfront about what medications he is giving you and the side effects that may happen but are unlikely. If you want a good doctor that knows what he is doing and actually cares about you more than a pymt. I highly recommend Dr.S. The new office staff seems very competent in their ability's I will continue to see him probably until he retires. Very wonderful, truly caring person in general

I went to this doctor after being unable to get in with another. Upon arrival he didn't shake my hand, introduce himself, invite me to sit down or even close the door behind me (I had to). He seems well able to write out prescripts, but doesn't off much as far as helping you work through anything. I'md doing the homework, coming up with possibilities, asking most of the questions. A recent appt was about 15 mins long and he talked about some situations about as much as I did. Aren't these appts suppose to be about me? And isn't he suppose to be helping me work through these things. I don't know if this is what a typical psychiatrist does, but I'll opt for a psychologist that gets to the nuts and bolts of things. Too, the waiting room is small, his office is too close to the waiting area and the staff runs around back and forth appearing harried and loud with the doors. It's not really the kind of environment that helps the reasons why we're all there.

So here's the thing... this man has me on like 5 meds (i only take one and i am FINE) but i can not get it re-filled without going for another visit. i dont get it. i ran out on friday and he would NOT call me in med. i had to wait until monday. what kind of dr is that. please tell me? and my med is Lamictal you have to start out at 25mg then 50 then 100 and so on. i was taking 100mg if you miss more than 2 days you have to start back at 25 now i know thats how the med. works but he knew that too and he still wouldnt call it in he said i could come in monday and start back at 25mg. WHAT... someone who has been taking 100mg of med can not just go back to 25 it wont do anything for them... he could have just called at him. needless to say i never went back and NEVER will. dont waste your time on him. he wont even let you talk all he does is run his mouth like he's the one with problem.

Add on from my previous rating. Schoonmaker had me on 6 psy meds (Serequel, Lexapro, Welbutrin, Xnax, Cymbalta, and Restoril for 4 years. I was a walking Zombie. I developed Tardive Dysknesia (uncontrolled mouth movements) most likely caused by the Serequel. When I confronted Schoonmaker about it he wrote me a letter of dismissal giving me only 2 weeks notice. I had to go "cold turkey" on the meds. After 4 years taking them every day I suddenly woke up one day without them. No weaning,. no nothing. Schoonmaker wouldn't even take my calls. I immediately went into seizures, hallucinated, attempted suicide and some more. Was a total nightmare. Trying going "cold turkey" on those 6 meds! The Hippocratic Oath that doctors take teaches the ethical practice of medicine and the sanctity of mankind. Scoonmaker didn't make the cut on this one.

My daughter hit the wall while at school and I was called in to control her. Dr. Schoonmaker saw her that day as a new walk-in patient. He has been working with her for nearly 2 years now and she is much better. He has been kind, patient and very supportive of me, the parent. My daughter has a long road ahead of her, but I belive with his help, she will be fine.

He seems to be concerned about helping my son but does seem to be a little easy with the scripts. After reading some of the other comments this concerns me and I will be looking into this further and getting a second opinion from his pediatrician about the number and amount of meds my son is on.

Very long wait, up to 2 hours. I felt that every time I came in he would ask me 3 or 4 questions and give me a NEW diagnosis and new medicines. When I did not agree to his exact regimen out of concern for my safety, he refused to see me as a client any longer.

I have been a patient here for about 4 years. Dr. Schoonmaker is very helpful. The problem that I find is that they book their appointments within 15 minutes of one another. The appointments generally go over 15 minutes, so the wait can be up to 2 hours long. The longest I have waited is 1 hour. I found the best times to go are earliest in the morning and late in the afternoon. Dr. Schoonmaker himself is an excellent Dr. It is important to be up front with him about your condition, because he tends to ask only a few questions after your first few appointments. I found him to be very patient and kind.
