Dr. Handel does a magnificent job explaining things. Initially saw him for a second option but after a bad experience with another oncologist transferred all care to Dr. Handel . He is compassionate and caring and very up to date with the most current research. He consistently demonstrated his interest in hearing about all problems and worked to correct them. He values quality of life and worked with my brother to help him obtain this goal. Unfortunately my brother died recently at home but with warmth and kindness Dr. Handel called me the next day to express his sympathy. That reflected to me his complete involvement and caring in his practice as an oncologist. I could not have asked for more from him or his amazing staff of highly qualified professionals.

I found Dr. Hantel to be very kind, sensitive, and exceptionally patient in explaining what was happening with my cancer. Have nothing but good remarks about him and his care.

I find these "rate a doc" sites so completely and utterly unfair. I have been with Dr. Hantel for 4 years and through some very dark days. I have always found him to be a kind and compassionate person and about as down to earth as you could ask for. Arrogant? Someone must be joking. That is the very last thing this man is. This office normally runs like a well oiled machine. If someone has had to wait a long time etc, this is a cancer center, things will not always be predictable. But know this, if you are facing cancer I honestly don't believe you could find a more decent, caring person to help you through it. I have nothing but respect for Dr. Hantel. Renee Newell

As I have been a patient of Dr, Hantel s for 8 years, I find these past ratings absolutely wrong!!! Never, have I had issues with call backs -- I've always felt like I'm treated with importance!! Arrogancey? Dr. Hantel?. Never, ever felt that!! The best Oncologist ever!! As I am a Stage Four patient, I wouldn't want any other Dr. to work with. Dr. Hantel is the best! And I have talked to several people that agree me. Go Dr.Hantel!!!

This review is regarding the office of Alexander Hantel, M.D. in Naperville, Illinois.
I called and left a detailed voice mail for the nurses a total of three times, over a ten month period. The first time, it took 4.5 days for someone to call me back, only to ask for the same information I already provided in my voicemail. Since the person returning my call left a voicemail at 4:57 PM on a Friday and did not answer when I immediately called back, I had to call back on the following Monday, making it seven days from my first call. (In hindsight, while it was not urgent, an earlier phone call to let me know the status would have been appropriate.) The second time, Dr. Hantel called me back the same day. The third time, it took 7 days (including a holiday) for someone to call. (This issue was on a timeline, which I detailed in the voice message, and resulted in me having to call another physician, who responded within 24 hours.)
I am not a particularly needy person. I don’t mind waiting an hour or an hour and twenty minutes for my scheduled appointment, as I have, because I know this is cancer, and there are sick people who need help. I am not the only one. I understand that. I am the optimistic one. I never asked why me. I console my loved ones. I do not ask to be consoled. Two of my doctors have told me I make it easy for them to be my doctor. Those words.
The only thing I ask is to be treated with respect. I have six doctors who are involved in my cancer treatment. This is the only doctor whose office takes more than 24 hours to return my call. I feel I cannot rely or depend on this practice.
I provided feedback to the practice the first time it took so long for someone to return my call. I thought it was an honest mistake and they would be concerned, or I might have made a mistake by calling the wrong person. I am writing this review, because it happened again and the roundabout way it was done (not detailed here) felt disrespectful and unprofessional. After thinking about it over several months, I am saddened I feel I have to write this review. I feel I cannot rely or depend on this practice. I will not go back.
This was my experience.

Always caring, always interested in my wife's care! Without a doubt the best doctor and person I've ever met. Gave us hope and knowledge.

A very arrogant person, who was never on time & kept patient waiting. That could explain why he didn't listen (to) or hear what patient was saying. Would ask patient questions then cut patient off if patient's answer too long. Didn't seem to want patient involved in patient's care. Didn't always tell the truth. Upon review of patient's medical record discrepancies found...documented that a complete exam done when in fact it hadn't...fictionalized portions of patient's medical history...would downplay patient's symptoms or not document them at all. And while this may not have had a direct impact on patient's outcome/care, these discrepancies are now part of patient's permanent record & have been forwarded to other providers. Would not recommend him to anyone.

Dr. Hantel is now heading up Edwards Cancer Center in Naperville, IL. He is the best oncologist ever. Loyola is a hospital with serious problems that just brought him down as a medical professional. Great to see him in Naperville.

Loyola Hospital has a very good reputation for being a good hospital.. however when one gets ill and actually needs knowledgeable doctors to help, Loyola does not live up to it's ratings. Horrible. Dr. Hantel was always backed up in his appointments, always having his patients wait for their appointments at least 30-45 min. He was very hard to get in touch with. Worked with his patients not out of his own will, but because it was a JOB and it was just routine.. as if every patient was the same.
