I DON'T KNOW HOW MUCH KNOWLEDGE HE HAS ABOUT RHEUMATOLOGY, BUT WHAT I DO KNOW IS THAT HE HAS NOT USED IT TO EFFECTIVELY TREAT ME. AFTER MANY YEARS OF TRAVELING DOWNTOWN FOR REGULAR APPOINTMENTS, I CAN SAY THAT I FEEL WORSE THAN EVER. IN THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS, I'VE GOT THE IMPRESSION THAT HE IS OVERDUE FOR RETIREMENT - HE SEEMS BURNED OUT. THIS IS NOT THE TYPE OF DOCTOR YOU NEED IF YOU HAVE A SEVERE CHRONIC ILLNESS, AND ARE ALWAYS EXHAUSTED YOURSELF. ALTHOUGH HE SEEMS LIKE A NICE GUY, I FEEL LIKE HE HAS BLOW ME OFF, AS ANOTHER PATIENT SAID. IN ADDITION, THOUGH, I WAS RECENTLY PRESSURED TO BUY A DRUG THAT I TOLD HIM I CAN NOT AFFORD. WITHIN 24 HOURS OF MY LAST APPOINTMENT, WHEN HE TOLD ME HIS OFFICE WAS WORKING WITH/FOR HUMIRA TO PROVIDE PATIENT ASSISTANCE, I RECEIVED AN ONSLAUGHT OF ROBOCALLS, EMAILS AND MAILINGS FROM THE COMPANY THAT MANUFACTURES HUMIRA (ABBVIE). I HAVE NEVER HAD A PRESCRIPTION FOR HUMIRA AND THE ONLY WAY THEY COULD HAVE GOT MY PRIVATE HEALTH INFORMATION WAS THROUGH THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO'S RELATIONSHIP WITH THE HUMIRA SALESPERSON WHO, ACCORDING TO HIS LATEST NURSE, MAGGIE, SPENT TIME AROUND DR. CURRAN'S OFFICE. I DID NOT GIVE MY PHONE NUMBER AND OTHER CONTACT INFORMATION TO THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO SO THEY COULD PASS IT ON TO DRUG DEALERS WITHOUT MY PRIOR INFORMED CONSENT. I DO SEE THAT ABBVIE GAVE WELL OVER A MILLION DOLLARS TO THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO BOARD OF TRUSTEES, AND THAT THE DRUG SALESPEOPLE GET BONUSES BASED ON HOW MUCH THEY SELL NOT HOW MUCH THEY ASSIST THE PATIENT, SO THE INCENTIVE IS FOR THEM NOT TO APPROVE APPLICANTS FOR THE SO-CALLED PATIENT ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS BUT TO USE THEIR CONTACTS (USUALLY THE RHEUMATOLOGISTS NURSE) TO GET NAMES, PRIVATE PHONE NUMBERS AND PRESSURE THE PATIENT TO LET THEM COME TO THEIR HOME SO THEY CAN "HELP THE PATIENT" DO THINGS THE PATIENT DOESN'T NEED HELP DOING. ONCE THERE, THEY'VE GOT THEIR FOOT IN THE DOOR, AND THE WEAK, SICK PATIENT CAN'T GET THEM OUT. I WAS VERY DISAPPOINTED WHEN DR. CURRAN PROMISED ME HE WOULD NOT GIVE MY NAME OR ANY INFORMATION FROM MY FILES TO THE HUMIRA SALESPERSON, BUT THEN WITHIN 24 HOURS OF THAT PROMISE, I GOT A ROBOCALL SAYING "THIS IS ABBVIE. WE HEARD YOU WERE INTERESTED IN HUMIRA. CALL US BACK AT (SOME NUMBER I SAVED). I TEXTED BACK "YOU HEARD WRONG. DO NOT CALL ME AGAIN". THE NEXT DAY, I RECEIVED ANOTHER ROBOCALL FROM ABBVIE. THEY STOPPED ONLY AFTER I CONTACTED NURSE MAGGIE AND SAID SHE SHOULD TELL THE HUMIRA SALESPERSON THAT I'D CALL THE POLICE IF I RECEIVED ONE MORE OF THESE ROBOCALLS. THAY WORKED, DESPITE NURSE MAGGIE SAYING THE HYMIRA SALESPERSON ASSURED HER HUMIRA NEVER USES ROBOCALLERS. PEOPLE WHO VIOLATE THE LAW TEND TO DENY IT, AND SINCE I'M ON THE DO NOT CALL REGISTRY, IT WAS ILLEGAL FOR THEM TO CALL ME. WELL, SOMEONE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO WHO HAD ACCESS TO MY PRIVATE HEALTH INFORMATION AND KNEW DR. CURRAN HAD ASKED ME IF I WAS INTERESTED IN FILLING OUT PATIENT ASSISTANCE FORMS LET THE HUMIRA SALESPERSON AT MY RECORDS OR GAVE HER TE INFORMATION SHE WANTED. I NEVER DID RECEIVED THOSE PATIENT ASSISANE FORMS, SO COULDN'T APPLY FOR PATIENT ASSISTANCE - YES, I DID SEND A MESSAGE TO DR. CURRAN SAYING I NEVER GOT THE FORMS, BUT RECEIVED NO REPLY FROM HIM. DO NOT TRUST DR. CURRAN'S OFFICE TO KEEP YOUR PRIVATE HEALTH INFORMATION PRIVATE UNLESS YOU FIRST GIVE INFORMED CONSENT, AS THE LAW SAYS. HE SHOULD KNOW BETTER, BUT I SUSPECT THOSE DONATIONS FROM THE DRUG DEALERS TO THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS TRICKLE DOWN SOMEHOW TO RHEUMATOLOGISTS OFFICES . WE ALL HAVE HEARD ABOUT THE POWER OF BIG PHARMA TO KEEP DRUG PRICES HIGHER IN THE U.S. THAN IN OTHER SIMILAR COUNTRIES. IT'S SHAMEFUL WHEN A DOCTOR LETS THEM CONVINCE HIM TO GIVE OUT PATIENTS PRIVATE HEALTH INFORMATION WHO THEN DO NOT EVEN PROVIDE PATIENT ASSISTANCE APPLICATIONS TO THE PATIENT.
