Dr. Smikle is a egomaniac in my opinion. I honestly think he lacked a sensitivity chip from the beginning of my time spent with him as a patient especially at the end. When I found out the transfer didn’t take all he kept saying was “I don’t know what happened…everything was looking great” like he was looking for me to give him answers. I felt like saying to him “Well If you don’t know how am I supposed to know.” Then over the phone he says “It’s not your fault!” like duh it’s nobody’s fault these things just kinda happen. He obviously is not good at delivering bad news!!! To make matters worse I scheduled an appointment to discuss the failed transfer. When I get there and finally get called into his office he has some woman there who is following me inside his office. She tried to stay not seeming to leave by which I look at him like “Who is this?” and without initially saying anything says later”Oh this is so and so who is shadowing me and would it be ok if she can stay?” I look at him in disgust saying “No she can’t!!!” You would think that’s first of all in violation of HIPAA and something that should be discussed before the appointment. Dr. Smikle once again shows his lack of professionalism and empathy for me as a woman and or patient. Then we start to discuss the failed transfer and I ask what our other 5 embryos ratings wore. He shows me all their ratings which mind you I didn’t know our 3 boy embryos were the highest from tge start. I told him if I’d known our boy embryos were the highest I might have considered one of the boys. Dr.Smikle says to me after mentioning thatI might have choosen one of our male embryos(had I known they were the highest rated) he said “No you wouldn’t have because you were set on a female embryo.” At this point Dr. Smikle’s arrogance definitely proved to me to be evident that he not only had no sensitivity chip but truly is condescending as well!!! I wish I had looked into other fertility clinics before settling with this doctor and his clinic that was referred to us by a lawyer.

Do NOT go to this doctor!!!! I know you have to take these reviews with a grain of salt since infertility is such a sensitive subject, but please read on!!
I do not need a doctor too hold my hand. I want a doctor who looks at the whole patient and the problem at hand. Because of this, I looked past his poor bedside manner. I quickly discover his true intentions of practicing medicine..... MONEY!! I went to him for unexplained infertility. Instead of running a multitude of tests to determine the problem, he pushed for the most invasive and costly IVF. When asked what I would do if I had triplets, I looked at my husband and said "I guess we would deal!" Because I was not willing to abort one of the fetus, and because I was "too small" to carry triplets, he was not comfortable doing IUI (a far less invasive and affordable option). My later research showed there was only a 3% chance of triplets with IUI....not a statistic he shared with us. I don't know his % of successful IVF, but if you want IVF and no other options he may be your guy. Just expect to be treated as a paycheck instead of a whole person.

Dr. Smikle and his staff are incredibly intelligent and wonderful people. My wife and I felt very comfortable and informed throughout the entire process. I cannot say enough good things about Dr. Smikle. His knowledge, bedside manner, professionalism and his sincere interest in helping people create a family are some of the reasons that lead me to believe he is the best doctor for ivf treatment.

Dr.Smikle's office staff was not organized. They had me do lab work 4 separate times, rather than using a simple checklist to insure all tests were complete. One test result came in day of retrieval, rather than being done prior to starting cycle. Turned out I had thyroid disease. It was not something I wanted to leave untreated before embarking on IVF, let alone after plunking down my $10k plus $4k for meds. I wasn't given the opportunity to treat my own health problem prior to cycle due to the organizational mix up. Office staff didn't know why my husband was at office, asked if they were freezing or analyzing sample. Left him with insecure feeling about where his sample would end up. The question was asked in front of numerous waiting visitors, which he felt violated his privacy as well. Embryologist and nursing staff were very professional and nice to work with.

Dr. Smikle and the Laurel team are truly the best!!!! As a direct result of the excellent care and treatment my husband and I received, we now have a daughter born in October 2008 as proof of such. Dr. Smikle and his team are diligent, compassionate, dedicated, persistent, outline realistic expectations for patients and partner with patients. I always felt that I was receiving the utmost in "Nordstom" quality care unlike in any other fertility practice (I had been to several other doctors/fertility clinics previously and was both heartbroken and disappointed at the impersonal and horrible care I received). Dr. Smikle, Dr. Engle (the embryologist), the anesthesiologist and his team were devoted to ensuring we had a successful outcome and althought it took us three attempts at Laurel ( minor compared to our previous attempts elsewhere with ai/iui), we are now proud parents of a healthy and precious baby and again can't say enough good things abotu Dr. Smikle and the practice!

Dr. Smikle and his coordinator had poor communication with each other which led to confusion for the patient. We had to keep asking questions to find out how to proceed because they were so disorganized. After expressing how the first office visit made us feel anxious rather than feeling like we were in good hands, Dr. Smikle and his coordinator did not follow-up with us as Dr. Smikle said they would in order to rebuild trust. Infertility is already a very stressful and sensitive health issue, but to have a doctor and his staff make you feel like you are just another car coming into the shop is not a place you want to ever go.
