Really really wish I could put zero stars.. anyways I'm 22 years old and back in March I got all four of my wisdom teeth pulled by Dr.Gilbert. I'm not one to complain and I have never even written a yelp review but I thought my story should be heard, considering the severity of his negligence. The surgery went fine and I thought I was healing properly but I noticed I still had numbness days after the surgery which I thought was odd so I made a checkup appointment. When I came in approximately a week after I got the surgery he took x-rays and said everything looked normal and it would probably just go away eventually (didn't seem too concerned). Anyways, in the weeks passing I started to get a sharp pain in a few of my teeth, I thought maybe I was getting a cavity so I didn't really think much of it, but as it progressed I went back in for a second visit and explained to him I was in pain and he told me I'm probably grinding my teeth at night which is preventing my mouth to heal properly from the wisdom teeth removal (made sense at the time). He advised me to use heating pads as well as ice packs. He also suggested I take advil. As the days continued the pain was getting worse and worse to the point where I was getting about 2 hours of sleep a night and was constantly taking ibprofen every 6-8 hours, and even with the medicine it was not guaranteed to help. It was starting to affect my everyday life and I was struggling to focus at school and work because of the constant pain I was in. Went in for ANOTHER visit and explained that the pain is getting way worse and is actually spreading to my whole mouth and even my jaw area, again he told me I need to really try and not grind my teeth, and he suggested I get a mouth guard from my dentist, which I did, $300 dollars later.... I got the mouth guard and nothing changed. I really was becoming hopeless and depressed because the pain was just so bad and nothing seemed to be helping me anymore, not even the ibprofen. So we went for a fourth visit to Dr. Gilbert, this time my mom came with me... I sat in front of him and cried my eyes out begging him to do something for me, my mom then questioned if it could possibly be related to something other than teeth grinding and he abruptly told us there was nothing more he could do for us and the only thing he could do is refer us to a pain specialist in LA (which would have costed us thousands). The moment I left his office I told my mom I would NEVER step foot in his office ever again. He was so incredibly rude and heartless, I couldn't believe what had just happened. Anyways, we ended up going to get a second opinion from a different oral surgeon who took x-rays right away and within an hour they were able to determine what was actually wrong with me. I had pieces of bone fragments in my jaw, it had absolutely nothing at all to do with teeth grinding. They advised me to get surgery right away to take out all the bone fragments before it caused any more damage than it already had. I ended up getting the surgery done through Kaiser because they were able to cover it through our insurance. When I had the surgery done they took a biopsy and found a bacterial infection in my jaw bone which was too severe for me to take oral antibiotics (there were too many risks).. so only weeks after recovering from my surgery I had to be placed on an IV bag for 6 weeks. For 6 weeks I had a tube going up my arm into my chest to administer the antibiotics into my system. I had to drop out of school for the semester and go on a leave of absence from work. The infectious disease doctor who treated me told me if this would have been caught from the beginning (meaning if x-rays would have been done sooner) I would not have had to have the IV due to the infection getting extremely severe. I know Dr.Gilbert did not do this to me, as my oral surgeon from Kaiser told me the bone fragments were just bad luck, however when a patient is consistently coming to you in severe pain you do everything in your power to help them not push them out of your office because you don't want to deal with it. All it would have taken was an x-ray on the second or third visit for him to see that something was not right (as I had been explaining to him for weeks). I'm assuming he reads these or someone in his office reads them and I do not want a reply apologizing, it's too late for that. The nurses and assistants were always nothing but nice to me especially when I was crying to them in pain. This complaint is not about Dr.Gilberts skills as an oral surgeon, this is a complaint about him as a human being and not caring about his patient. I just want people to be aware of this, I personally will be telling everyone I know to never step foot in his office. However on the bright side the oral surgeons from Loma Linda and Kaiser were absolutely amazing I'm forever grateful they acted fast and took great care of me and months later I'm back to living my normal everyday life.
