On Wed, May 27th, 2026, I visited the Emergency department of St. Joseph's for the first time. I was born in this hospital 56 years ago. But, this was my first visit ever to an emergency department for myself in my adult life. I guess I have been lucky so far. Over the last few days, my right eye was exhibiting some of the symptoms that could be reflective of a possible retinal tear or retinal detachment. I contacted my own Optometrist that day, but they were unable to fit me in since they were booked solid all day and were just down to one doctor. But, given my symptoms, the assistant at my Optometrist's office strongly suggested that I quickly visit an Emergency room, thus my visit to St. Joseph's. My first visit ever was a positive and solid experience. In the Emergency Room, I had the privilege of being looked after by Dr. Maria Ivankovic. Dr. Ivankovic was wonderful. She had such a lovely caring and friendly approach. She really made me feel that she cared about my eye health and about whatever my next steps will be. While she ended up recommending a further call to an Ophthalmologist, Dr. Ivankovic left me with a great impression and she did an exemplary job of making me feel comfortable, welcome to the Emergency Room, and cared for. Dr. Ivankovic surely goes through a lot and has likely seen almost everything. But, she made me feel like my eye concerns were very important to her and she did not diminish my worries and stress in any way. She had a warm "bedside" manner and she was super pleasant, smiley, and approachable. With Dr. Ivankovic, I did not at all feel like a "number". Thank you so much, Dr. Ivankovic! THanks for looking after me. I truly appreciate your support and help! As an aside, it does appear that I have small retinal tear that I'll have to assess further. Overall, my first experience to an Emergency Room was a good experience and also made me appreciate much more as to what this entire team of amazing dedicated and hard-working physicians go through. My distant respect for them has morphed into a more direct and higher level of admiration. Thank you, Dr. Ivankovic. Tom P.

Was diagnosed with pneumonia and sent home with Rx moxifloxacin. Returned to ER after unable to tolerate medications due to vomiting them up. Ended up going back to the ER saw Dr Ivankovic again, right away got me the help I needed. Ended up needing a chest tube, and spending over a week in intensive care. When i was leaving Dr Ivankovic came to see me off even though I was not her patient that entire time. Shes 10/10.

Dr. Ivankovic is the doctor's doctor. She is a true expert, kind and extremely knowledgeable. She carefully examined me and diagnosed my shingles with very subtle findings. She is widely respected in the medical profession and her heart is pure gold. She makes medicine a better profession. A model physician.
