My elderly father was admitted in and out of MDHS for over a year! Each time he went back, it was with worsening symptoms that before and difficulties walking. The worst of it came when he was admitted in January 2019 with supposed pneumonia and a UTI. Discharged him a few days later, was back in early March and told that there was nothing wrong with him. Rushed in by ambulance 4 days later with a high fever, vomiting and fighting an infection. Turns out COPD and bladder cancer !!! The inept staff from nurses and doctors were appalling !!! And when he was sent over to the CTC for slow stream rehab, he was left to suffer through a skin infection for 3 weeks as doctors wouldn't go see him. Finally got there attention when I filed a formal complaint and threatened to contact a lawyer.
My adult son took a fall and seriously hurt his side to the point he couldn't move. We all estimated he had broken a rib, at least. We went to the ER and realized his health card had expired. He was told, he could be seen by a dr, but he would have to pay. To see a dr, have X-rays, and blood work would cost him $2000. If he didn't have the money, they would to invoice him, but he had to pay it in Full the next day. And he could apply to Health Canada to be reimbursed his money once he received his new card, however, he could wait up to 6 months to receive his money in the mail. As a single father, he is not in a financial position to wait that long. So he was sent home, untreated. He spent all night and the next day in excruciating pain, not being able to move. First thing Monday morning, we took him to Service Ontario to renew his health card. Back to the hospital and was processed again, had X-rays, and was confirmed with a broken rib. During that visit, he was told by the attending physician that there is no way he should have been sent home on Saturday night. That dr basically explained that they should have given him an invoice, and on Monday when he could get his temp card, the invoice would be ripped up. Brutal treatment. ER staff has no compassion whatsoever!
I strongly think that they have a policy to hire the peaple with the worst possible attitude and the most impolite people towards patients. The emergency nurses will treat you as if they are making you an undeserved favor for registering you but not missing the oportunity to lecture you with what you should and shouldn't do. I may be of some old fashion but I think that this personal should register the patients with expediance and without fuss, but maybe I'm asking too much.
Have been there last night for severe pain in left flank, there was a sharp contrast between the night shift staff and morning shift nursing staff,Morning shift was seemed so concerned and professional, while the former were not bothered at all about someone screaming with pain. All in all ot took me 12 hours, the doctor was really nice and gave me a refferal.
