I had been suffering with BPH for about 20 years. I had tried medication, but the side effects were worse than the illness. On the other hand, I had resisted the traditional intervention called TURP (Transurethral Resection of the Prostate), an intervention performed by Urologists. Although it had been gold standard for treatment of BPH, it may have side effects as Incontinence and Impotence. Last year, being 78 years old, and the with my prostate affecting my quality of life (frequent urination day and night, dribbling in urinating, etc.) especially if I had to travel, I found a solution through the web. The intervention is called PAE (Prostatic Artery Embolization), and it is done by Dr. Ganesan Annamalai, at Mount Sinai Hospital. Result: I had the intervention (no surgery, no cut, just a catheter introduced in my left arm and from there the doctor reached my prostate and embolized it (plugged it up). It lasted almost three hours, but I and went home a couple of hours later. Now, few words about Dr. ANNAMALAI GANESAN, who is an "Interventional Radiologist". Doctors are highly skilled professionals, but not all doctors are approachable and friendly. Sometimes that is what is effective between a good doctor and a great doctor. That is what I have found in Dr. Annamalai, a friendly, approachable, qualified professional. It has been over a year since my intervention and my quality of life has improved drastically. Furthermore, PAE is covered by OHIP, costing me nothing. I would like to recommend anyone who is suffering from BPH, to try the PAE procedure. Ask your urologist to make a recommendation to Dr. Annamalai. Of course, other Urologists may recommend the TURP or other more modern intervention, (which are costly, because they are not covered by OHIP), but it would not hurt to try PAE first.
