Ratings for Dr. Deborah Zwicker
I brought my aged Mother to see Dr. Zwicker to hear her blood work report. Our family Physician shared the results before we saw Ms Zwicker. All was very good. Her Cortisol levels were high but he was not concerned and said he would not touch my Mom's dosage. When we saw Ms. Zwicker she said Mom's report was good but said her Cortisol levels were high. She lowered the dosage on her second pill. I asked if there would be any side effects. Without hesitation she said emphatically 'NO"! I inquired if my Mother would need blood work done in the not too distant future. Again without hesitation she said "NO!" Well my Mom over a month went into shock, She couldn't talk, walk and couldn't stop shaking. She couldn't get out of bed and was incontinent. When I saw our Family Doctor he was dumbfounded re: my Mom's condition. I then told him that one of her pills was cut. He asked if all these symptoms happened when her dosage was cut. I said 'Yes" He instructed me to put my Mom back on the full dosage for the second pill. I did and my Mom is back to normal thank God. I called Ms. Zwicker's office. She was not in and so I told my story to the receptionist. She said she would tell Zwicker. I did not hear back from D. Zwicker. That is poor. She is so lucky my Mom did not die. My Mom was going into shock and could have died. Thank heavens I mentioned my Mom's condition to my Doctor. He will be journeying with my Mom from now on. So long Zwicker. I would not recommend her at all. If you need an endocrinologist go to Halifax.
Dr Zwicker is knowledgeable, stylish, and compassionate, as stated in other reviews on this site. She is also able to think, and willing to do so, a quality not always apparent in physicians of her generation. She is very kind and supportive in difficult situations, not unwilling to manage a complicated patient with multiple pathologies and some history of being the victim of malpractice and professional negligence, as well as tendency to question and ask for clarification. I know of what I speak as i have spent my lifetime working in health care, the final 30 years teaching in medical colleges. I am also the daughter and niece of of 3 very successful physicians, one of whom practised in Sydney for 40 years. I have also been positively impressed by another specialist to whom she had referred me. Both her office nurse and her receptionist also manifest the same calm, kind, caring manners on all occasions I've seen them. I believe the tone of a working unit is set from the top down, which again reflects on Dr Zwicker. I have nothing but gratitude and admiration for her and her staff.
Very little compassion shown, I saw her once and then it seemed like I was taking up her time, for any type of follow-up. I was told to see my family doctor. So I am still not sure if I have been treated or diagnosed correctly. This is very disappointing and sadly I am being referred to see a doctor in Halifax.
I was removed from Dr. Zwicker's patient list when her office said they had tried calling without an answer back. Perhaps they had tried one of the old numbers on my file (which I feel should have been deleted when I gave my new number) because my incoming call log from August until December does not include them. I have always been super happy with the care I received from Dr. Zwicker and her staff but felt completely disrespected on this matter. Aside from this issue, my previous appointments with Dr. Zwicker have been great. She is available for her patients and very knowledgable.
Several family members, with long histories of endocrine diseases each, were cared for by Dr. Zwicker. Guidelines for dosing were not followed. One of the diseases was completely ignored- the low hormone levels revealed in testing were "good enough". From the treatment I saw, over months of care, I wondered if Ms. Zwicker needed assistance at home to set the thermostat for her furnace because she just couldn't regulate the meds. The human body, helped by a doctor with good sense, should run like a well oiled machine guided by a good mechanic with common sense. It became more and more obvious to me that Ms. Zwicker is neither a mechanic nor a good doctor. My heart goes out to the patients who are depending on her expertise to guide them back to optimum health as "good enough" may be as close as they will come. If you are sick for years , sometimes you may think that's enough-it's not!
Dr. Zwicker is very helpful, bright, and knows her stuff. What I like is that she treats me like a person with a BRAIN, instead of a child, which a lot of people have been doing during my pregnancy. I find the nurse to be a bit condescending and rude at times, but the doctor herself is great. The secretary is also pretty accommodating with scheduling.
I was looking for patient-centred care, but I did not receive it. No one chooses to be a Type 1 diabetic and I wanted to have a say in my health care, but I felt limited due to lack of communication encouraged. There was little compassion as well. All diabetics have options so these need to be made available not limited or controlled as it was for me. The information given to educate me about Diabetes was delivered too late and very basic as well. If helping a patient causes undue stress than this doctor did not help her patient.
An awesome doctor! I've been a T1 Diabetic for over 20 years and I've had a fair share of Endo's over the years. I must say, Dr.Zwicker has been the best one yet! A very smart lady who listens and understands the ups/downs of being a diabetic. She offers great advice and has been there for me when I've needed her most in my life. Great bedside manner, stylish and a smart cookie!
