saw him in his rooms. he was shaking when he examined me and did a sonar. he twisted my arm to such a degree its not normal for his diagnosis, then he said if that was sore I should have an MRI. I had the MRI, he never phoned back, Iwill personally never recommend him to anyone.

Firstly, love the efficient booking procedure for appointments-love the website booking system. My appointment went very smoothly and I appreciated the thorough options given to me by Dr De Beer. He explained all my options and allowed us (my husband and I) to make an informed decision on how I should proceed with the treatment of my shoulder. Pre – op was a smooth procedure with all the information received well in advance via email (so efficient) so I was prepared. Day of the procedure went smoothly and the hospital was really good, all staff very polite and professional and took good care of me both before and after surgery. Lastly having been charged medical aid rates by all the Drs and service providers involved was amazing as all we received was confirmation of payment from Discovery Health. I will gladly refer Dr De Beer . I am extremely happy and appreciative…saved from an early unnecessary shoulder replacement surgery!

I like to keep comments and ratings positive however this would be misleading in this case. I was recommended Dr Joe de Beer by a number of friends and colleagues, telling me he is the doyenne of shoulder surgery. Going to him was a big mistake - he is the orthopaedic surgeon who failed in my shoulder surgery. At the consultation he did not bother looking up from his PC until I had to interrupt him and introduce myself. He appeared to be more interested in watching my girlfriend that listening to my shoulder problems. His bedside manner is dismal and his ego overinflated. His post surgery feedback in my instance was misleading and incorrect as attested to by his assistant who saw me the following day and indicated there had been complications during surgery. De Beer chose to keep this part from me, telling me the op was a success. 4 months post surgery and I have a frozen shoulder, no improvement, impingement and more pain than before my operation. It was a failed procedure and I will have to seek help from a different surgeon to operate once again. I am highly disappointed and will never return to De Beer.

Was referred by other patients after my shoulder injury. My first examination was a positive expierence and so was the operation. My dealings with Dr De Beerwas very professional and I can recommend him. My follow up as to the success after procedure will take place within the next 4 weeks, which ai believe would be positive. So far I can only give positive feedback.

I had surgery with Joe...he fixed the problem but man this guy is just so full of himself it's ridiculous. Addressed me in a condescending tone.. completely ignored me when I walked in, no greeting nothing just continued working on his computer..it was when I stood to walk out that he deemed it suitable to apologise and greet. I wouldn't use him again. He is not the only knowledgeable Dr out there and honestly I don't need his attitude.

Wrong diagnosis of problem, went into surgery and there was nothing wrong! Waste of money and time

Dr Joe de Beer treated me respectfully when I went for the original consult as I had my partner (a Dr) with me; he treated me very differently when I went to see him alone for the follow-up after the op! He scoffed when I asked him about any alternative therapies (e.g. biological therapies like Cartilage stimulation / PRP). The debridement itself seemed to have gone well, although I woke up with a chunk of flesh/skin ripped from my chest that no-one could explain - I still have the scar. Most concerning though, was that the feedback I received from Joe de Beer directly after the op (on what he found inside my shoulder) was completely different from what he told me he found during my follow-up consultation. During this latter consultation, there were other medical staff sitting in, who seemed to need to finish his sentences for him. During the follow-up he also laughingly said: "I'll show you where it still hurts" and then gripped my shoulder so that I was shouting out loud with pain - he just laughed heartily. I've nursed the shoulder along for 2.5 years now since the debridement as I don't want to go back to him; I'll find someone else. I also had to fight for months to receive the correct invoice, so that once I did get it, it fell in a different Medical Aid year causing me admin headaches & a chunk of my savings gone. Originally I only heard good things from the people I spoke to on whom he worked decades ago; it must be true that he was top of his game in his day.

It would be nice if there were ratings for success of procedure. Had keyhole surgery on my right shoulder as there was no cartilage left....it was not done properly and on my follow up visit it was decided that I had to have open shoulder surgery (as not enough bone was taken away)...the second surgery was a success however I was hounded by his practice to pay for my follow up because he did an ultra sound which was due to the failed first operation and that is not usually done in a follow up!!!! Seriously. That being said Dr De Beer is a very nice man with a great bedside manner

I had very conservative treatment by Dr Joe de Beer. Only when that did not work did he suggest surgery. He is a very caring doctor and took a lot of trouble to make sure I was comfortable with the procedure. He warned me about side effects. I think he is a great doctor and would highly recommend him. He goes out of his way to assist. He does not give up.

Dr Joe de Beer has everything in place to impress, great rooms, a good staff and the look of an expert. We however are extremely disappointed at his personal delivery - two shoulders ops have failed! His explanation? that the op was meant for young men, not older men like my husband. Why then, I ask, did you do the op in the first place if it was not appropriate? We found his attitude to our worries about two failed ops seriously bad. Instead of an explanation and a solution, he tried to minimize our complaints by explaining that he had a very big practice, and was even going overseas to present a paper. Quiet frankly this is zero importance to us. All we wanted was a good operation first time round so we would suggest he spends less time on his ego, and more on his operating skills. We are seeing another doctor for a second opinion and do NOT recommend Dr Joe de Beer or his institute to others.
