Dr Ford told me my extremely painful lump in my breast was mastitis, basing this on the redness in the area. She did not send me for a mammogram. A month later when the antibiotics hadn't worked (no wonder, I was 47 years old, no reason for me to have mastitis since my youngest child was 11 years old), I returned and she finally referred me for a mammogram - but a 'waiting list' mammogram which took 3 weeks, as she stated she could feel no lump. She actually threw her hands up in the air and said to me "I'll refer you for a mammogram as that's all they'll be happy with". Presumably she was referring to either the practice nurse or the mammogram service who I'd been speaking to. I had a 2cm lump of invasive breast cancer, that's what the painful red area with the lump was. The biopsy person wrote there was an easily palpable lump.
