Ratings for Dr. Denis I. Becker
2.9
My name is Doris Lindsay. I am 86 years old. In all my years going to Drs. I have never experience a more through Dr. He took time and explained all about my Thyroid condition. He put me at ease as my anxiety was very high concerning my condition. Before seeing him his Nurse was one of a kind. Took her valuable time with me to help me feel at ease. Thank you to My new Physician and his Nurse
This rating is for Dr. Becker. As a person who has spent a lot of time in various doctor's offices, I can honestly say that I've never had a worse experience with a medical professional. So bad that I broke down in tears during my visit. First, there is no question that the electronic medical records system is ruining healthcare in America in general. (It's one among many things doing so, but still.) Dr. Becker takes electronic medical records to a whole new level. He was so obsessed with writing down what I was saying that he didn't appear to actually hear anything at all. He made minimal eye contact and he obsessed over what billing code I might fall into. Second, on the theme of listening, his interaction with me was so bizarre and robotic that I wondered for a while afterward if he actually might have some sort of disorder himself. Here's how this played out. I went in thinking that I might have some sort of thyroid disorder. Horrible fatigue, weight gain, brain fog, stomach issues, skipping periods, etc. etc. The following conversation ensued: Dr. B: Your test results are negative for a thyroid disorder. M: Ok, but I'm still suffering from these symptoms. What are some other options? Dr. B: It could be anything, really. [full stop] M: .... Well I've been reading about PCOS and I've had these various symptoms. Could it be PCOS? Dr. B: Oh, well you definitely have PCOS. M: Ok, well, isn't there treatment for PCOS? Dr. B: There are several, but you haven't been tested for PCOS. M: Ok.... so I'll take the test. Dr. B: Well, there's not really a test. M: Ok, so how do you know anyone has PCOS. Dr. B: Well, from these various symptoms, I can say you have PCOS. M: Ok.... so why can't you prescribe treatment for PCOS? Dr. B: Because you didn't come to see me for PCOS. You came to see me about a thyroid disorder and you don't have a thyroid disorder. And so on, such that I was trapped in an unwinnable logic game with my doctor who was somehow unable to treat me because I didn't check the appropriate boxes on the intake form. (Shame on me for confusing a thyroid problem with any other endocrine issue.) Third, his condescension regarding my health issues is what ultimately brought me to tears. I said I had fatigue so bad that I couldn't even make it to work some days, when I had a history of working 8 hour days and then spending 2 hours in the gym regularly. His responses included, "sometimes we don't have as much energy as we would like to think that we do" and "sometimes our age catches up with us." (I'm 33, by the way.) When I complained about weight loss despite my very tightly controlled macro counting diet for my 5'9 cross-fit frame (see, e.g., two hours at the gym, etc.), he told me that couldn't possibly need to eat more than 1200 calories a day. I found it callous and, dare I say, sexist, that he did not recognize my symptoms as legitimate. Thus, the tears. Go to Dr. Becker if you have a clearly defined measurable issue. He is probably a great doctor for reading labs and administering medicine accordingly. But if you have anything less than an easy answer and are looking for someone to really think through your healthcare with you, spare yourself the time, frustration, and tears. Skip this doctor.
I have been going to Dr. Becker for 9 years now. I am 64 years old and have the most confidence in him than any other medical professional I have gone to. I like that he starts each appointment with asking me about any updates, how I am feeling and if anything has changed before he looks at my lab results. He does not let the data drive the conclusion. Rather, he reviews how I feel first and then interprets the data. He is thorough, knowledgeable and clearly enjoys his work. His walls are covered with year after year of Best Endocrinologist recognition and I completely agree with his recognition. The people who do lab work are efficient and painless in drawing blood for labs. He and hs primary nurse have a strong synergy and she is caring, knowledgeable and very responsive to questions and follow ups.
I saw Dr. Becker about a year ago. He was great, very understanding and helpful. I became much more educated to parts of my care I needed to know. I have recommended him to many friends and can't say enough goodv to demonstrate how great of a doctor I feel he is. Very Highly Recommend !!
The first time I saw Dr. Becker I finally felt understood and cared for. This was after receiving alarming test results from another physician. He took time with me. My second appointment was the worst medical appointment I have ever had. He didn't know what was wrong with me, talked over me, and insulted me. I thought I was crazy. I felt so awful I burst into tears after my appointment. Then I looked up his reviews and seems I am not the only one who has had this experience. He made me feel terrible, I felt my trust had been betrayed. I would suggest that if you are in need of an endocrinologist do some research. He is not the guy you want to see.
Very kind, caring, professional and yet took time to explain in detail the procedures, expectations, and instructions to insure I was inform me with all the information I needed to know concerning my cancer tests and treatments.
As a thyroid cancer survivor keeping my TSH @ undetectable levels is CRITICAL to my remission. For 2 years after surgery & radiation I was on a specific dose of synthroid w/great success. Every checkup & test during that time showed it was the appropriate dose w/no side effects. Despite that Dr. Becker pressured me to lower my dose. He criticized me for not listening to him & I relented, against my better judgement b/c it worked why mess with it. W/in 4 months my TSH multiplied 50 times to extremely dangerous levels for a cancer survivor! When I questioned his motives for forcing this issue he told me I was overreacting that a patient should never question a doctor! I fired him on the spot & my new dr concurred that what he did was criminal & should have NEVER happened. I found http://projects.propublica.org/docdollars/ Dr. Becker has taken $243,191 from drug companies between 2009-11 for "speaking engagements". The drug companies & $ motivate his decisions & the way he practices
Staff doesn"f return calls even though the Dr.swears that they do.Charges $30 just to pick up records that were dropped off 2 months before.Entire office is very unprofessional.
Dr. Becker takes time to explain the tests he is running and why they are important. He is personable and helpful.
These reviews are flattering to this doctor who never once looked up from typing on his keyboard, answered a personal cell phone call while we were with him, was completely unhelpful and hopeless for my son's serious condition and left us with "Sorry..." and nothing! We were shocked really at how unknowledgeable and unhelpful this awkward doctor is. Yes, he has won awards, but how did this happen? Maybe his expertise lies in cut and dried diabetes cases but no more. Awful experience!
