I have been seeing psychiatrists almost my whole life and Dr. Stein has by far been the best. She's brilliant and has a wealth of up-to-date knowledge of psychiatry as well as other medical fields. In this way, she is always cognizant and thoughtful about how certain psychiatric treatments may affect other conditions, medications, etc. that you may have. She is very accessible, so she is quick to respond to patient communications and resolve any issues. Finally, Dr. Stein is so kind and approachable, and I have always felt completely comfortable being 100% open and honest with her. I am so thankful for Dr. Stein, and cannot emphasize enough how much she has helped and supported me.

Dr. Stein helped me transition from multiple poorly prescribed medications to better suited options without any side effects. I’ve never had a Psychiatrist so thorough that truly cared about my well-being. She’s matter of fact and answers all of my questions. I love that!

This doctor is a charlatan. I spent a fortune on TMS treatment with her because of her claim that she had an 80% success rate with it. That is far higher that what I had read about TMS and the reason I went ahead with the treatment. After the treatment was unsuccessful, she insisted it was successful and that she had evidence that it worked. She even said that the reason I refused to accept that her TMS treatment was successful was because I am mentally ill. Her office is very professionally run, she has a very friendly demeanor, and she is very knowledegable- but she is a fraud.

Dr. Kira D. Stein's response
While I have not practiced transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) for years, I completely empathize with your frustration. TMS is designed to treat clinical depression that has been non-responsive to medication. Anyone who has invested their time, hopes, and finances into a new procedure without experiencing substantial relief and response is understandably disappointed.

To suffer from medication-resistant depression usually means months or even years of chronic depression, often affecting families, relationships, careers, physical health, and of course self-esteem.

The need for a treatment alternative other than psychotherapy and medication was why I became an early TMS provider. Indeed, when I started offering TMS soon after it was FDA cleared in 2011, insurance companies were generally refusing coverage and the cost of TMS was high at most centers. TMS was especially pricey for solo practitioners like me who cherished the healing potential of psychotherapy, medication, exercise and other approaches, etc., and did not want to turn their practices into TMS-only centers.

Unfortunately, your review inaccurately confuses "response rates” with "success rates". “Response rate” reflects symptom reduction, and not complete cure. In research studies, and also at my office, TMS "response" vs. "non-response" rates were determined by comparing pre-TMS vs, post-TMS patient depression severity questionnaire scores and clinical evaluations. I have always appreciated that the term "response", even if clinically and technically accurate, could be misunderstood as “cure”, which is why I always took the time to educate patients about these terms before they decided on TMS.

On another note, it really pains me to think that my attempt to review treatment response with anyone could ever feel invalidating in any way. I really try to be compassionate and supportive while being evidence-based and up-to-date. I will take even more care to be mindful about this going forward.

Medication-resistant depression is a very difficult condition to treat, and when symptoms persist despite TMS or other treatments, deep disappointment is completely understandable. It is my hope that this response helps people better understand the economic realities of new medical innovations (even if FDA cleared) as well as the importance of understanding treatment outcomes data in order to have realistic expectations.

I have been going to Dr. Stein for about 10 years. I went in with severe depression, and she worked with me to get the right meds in order to get my depression under control. She is very professional, yet very compassionate. She has always been there when I needed her. Her staff is friendly and very responsive to emails and voicemail messages. I would highly recommend Dr. Stein if you are in need of a psychiatrist.

Biography

I am a psychiatrist and have been a medical doctor for two decades. I partner with my patients to help them reach and maintain mental health and balance. I chose psychiatry as my medical specialty because I thoroughly enjoy both the science of medicine and the application of psychotherapy - both effective tools that can be used independently or in combination to achieve emotional wellness. I am also interested in supplements (such as omega-3 fatty acids, certain herbs, vitamins and minerals), relaxation techniques and exercise approaches to mental wellness, and also provide consultations for non-invasive, non-drug treatment for depression. I have not provided TMS for a number of years and refer appropriate TMS candidates to larger centers
