I did not think that I would be writing this review due to the shame that came along with my experience and the fact it was about half a year since it happened, however following a similar experience from a close friend of mine with Dr McCauley I thought it would be reasonable to warn patients coming to see him for mental health issues.
To start, Dr McCauley’s treatment of patients with mental health issues is extraordinarily poor. I came to Dr McCauley for a completely different issue to start, however I presume that the issue was somewhat uncomfortable for him to discuss and so he instead chose to comment on my sitting posture. I do have a rather severe social anxiety problem, however Dr McCauley’s handling of it upon his realisation was poor and simply quite cruel. As I was sitting there, quite terrified as previously I was talking about a rather embarrassing issue, Dr McCauley proceeded to mock how I sat in fear. He mimicked my facial expression and how I sat and spoke in a mocking tone which made me more afraid of him. He appeared to take relish in noticing the rather obvious physical cues of anxiety and for some reason showing off that he noticed them.
The experience made me feel humiliated and scared. I am a young person and as Dr McCauley is much older than myself I felt terrified at what was going on. Every time I tried to speak he further mocked my tone of voice without providing any advice as to how to help it and how, in his view, I should sit and behave and instead mimicked me to my distress. He showed extraordinarily poor understanding of mental health, ironically, as my friend said that he accused a fellow General Practitioner in the same clinic of poor understanding of mental health.
It appeared to me that Dr McCauley may have read books regarding anxiety disorder however he did not at all study how to handle patients with such problems. He appeared to be delighted to exert his power over a younger, weaker person in a bad mental state who was clearly terrified of him and his behaviour. Whether I cried from distress and was obviously panicked he mocked me further and made the situation worse; he left my friend in a similar form of distress.
Dr McCauley is a prime example of why people like me are scared to ask for help in the first place. Following the appointment, I felt hopeless, humiliated, and suicidal as I believed that I was only wasting time and that there was nothing that could help me as the very person who is paid to help patients with health, both mental and physical, instead belittled my state and made it into a complete joke. Looking back, I am utterly disgusted by Dr McCauley’s handling of the situation and I will avoid any future appointments with him. Whilst he suggested another appointment for next week, I did not call to obtain it as I did not wish to go through the same experience again and my parents advised me to not seek any help with mental health from Dr McCauley.
Therefore, if you do plan to get help for your mental health, please do avoid this GP.
