Dr. Fourie and I, on a doctor patient level, click. Plain and simple.

What most seem to perceive as arrogance, I simply see as a very blunt and to the point personality. He’s South African, they aren’t exactly known for beating around the bush, but it’s never given me the impression that he doesn’t care about why I’m there to see him.

Perfect example, today I had an appointment for 11:50 (booked only two days previous, in a constantly swamped office to boot) to have some minor skin issues and joint inflammation looked at that didn’t seem to want to go away.

I arrived 10 minutes prior to a PACKED office, yet once checked in, was in the secondary waiting room by 11:55, and sitting down with Dr.Fourie by a few minutes after 12. If that’s not punctual, I don’t know what is!

He gave me a quick look over and asked questions, then recommended a course of action for 30 days, and wants me to come back for a follow up at that time to see how the medication has responded, and go from there if needed.

As far as referrals go, I’ve never had an issue. I had two appointments with him for a different issue that my doctor in BC (before I moved to Alberta) never seemed to be able to solve. After two appointments and no success, I had a referral in place. Not only that, but as the situation at that point had become more serious, he called the kipnes eurology centre HIMSELF to get me in. Minor surgery completed, and I’ve been a year issue free!

Now let’s talk smoking and weight issues..

Until a year ago I was a heavy smoker, but finally kicked the habit. When I still smoked, Dr Fourie gave me hell for it with every visit, but didn’t make me feel less of a human because I did. Not to mention, the very definition of his line of work is wanting you to be in the best health possible, so naturally, being told to quit smoking constantly should be expected.

As far as weight goes, I have hard time believing he treats people horribly if they carry an 10-15 extra pounds, many people do, myself included. That being said, if you’re going into his (or any doctors office) weighing 350 +pounds and smoking one to two packs a day all while not seeming to be bothered about your weight and overall health, how exactly can you expect your doctor to care for or help you?

I’m pretty sure you can figure out who this is Dr. F. I truly appreciate your help and advice when I see you.

Thank You

I posted back in 2012, and just recently stumbled across ratemds again, so I figured I'd check to see if my review as still up. To my surprise, it is. I am posting again, to offset Jan's reviews of himself. It is so blatantly obvious. Have a look at the number of reviews complaining about specialist visits - and then read this one:

"I have seen him for years and have been impressed with the amount of specialist referrals that I have recieved through him, in fact I travel now to go back to Boyle to see him as I have always been treated very well."

Not only did he attempt damage control for his lack of specialist visits, purposely making people suffer, lets have a look at the rest of the review:

"He comes across as very knowledgeable and respectfull and referring to others comments, I am both a woman and overweight. I also really appreciate the front office staff, they have always been most helpfull."

Ah yes, dissolving those claims that you're a piece of sexist trash - next time Fourie, you may want to put a little more effort it. This is toddler level intelligence - or just a total lack of effort. Either way, it's reminiscent of how much effort you put in the office too. Be weary of this one folks. He has potential, but is far too busy stroking his own ego, pill pushing, and being the face of the cluster B personality disorders. It's too bad. You might remember me Fourie. I'm the guy you said it was all in my head, then I was later ambulanced off to Edmonton with a diagnosis of Still's Disease (that, I've since gotten rid of). My visits were 50/50 with you. Sadly the bads were so bad they overtake all the good.

Used to be a caring doctor. But not anymore. Gave me the wrong advice more than once. Time for him to move on.

Absolutely the most arrogant doctor I have ever seen. He dismisses your concerns, acts as though no one should question his medical knowledge. Awful experience, doctor & human being

I live in Boyle but my family doctor is in Lac La Biche which is 70kms away. You can imagine how inconvenient that is especially in the middle of winter or when I just need a quick prescription refill or have a simple issue I need checked. I have always been able to see Dr.Fourie on short notice and the staff are always pleasant. Prescription refills - no problem, just bring in the old prescription and explain why. I have also struggled with my weight for years and not once has he treated me like lesser of a person because of it. He has been pleasant and professional. Best of all, no long waits, in and out of his office in record time with new prescription in hand.

This Doctor is always rushed, barely listens and recommends physiotherapy for everything...he used to be much more caring and patient.

I was seen in the E.R. for an anaphylactic reaction. While the hospital nurses, techs, and assistants were all attentive and good, Jan Fourie's reviews by others are sufficiently negative regarding his manner to cover my experience with him. In addition, as a former medic, I have to question some of his medical decisions.
