Dr. Fourie and I, on a doctor patient level, click. Plain and simple.
What most seem to perceive as arrogance, I simply see as a very blunt and to the point personality. He’s South African, they aren’t exactly known for beating around the bush, but it’s never given me the impression that he doesn’t care about why I’m there to see him.
Perfect example, today I had an appointment for 11:50 (booked only two days previous, in a constantly swamped office to boot) to have some minor skin issues and joint inflammation looked at that didn’t seem to want to go away.
I arrived 10 minutes prior to a PACKED office, yet once checked in, was in the secondary waiting room by 11:55, and sitting down with Dr.Fourie by a few minutes after 12. If that’s not punctual, I don’t know what is!
He gave me a quick look over and asked questions, then recommended a course of action for 30 days, and wants me to come back for a follow up at that time to see how the medication has responded, and go from there if needed.
As far as referrals go, I’ve never had an issue. I had two appointments with him for a different issue that my doctor in BC (before I moved to Alberta) never seemed to be able to solve. After two appointments and no success, I had a referral in place. Not only that, but as the situation at that point had become more serious, he called the kipnes eurology centre HIMSELF to get me in. Minor surgery completed, and I’ve been a year issue free!
Now let’s talk smoking and weight issues..
Until a year ago I was a heavy smoker, but finally kicked the habit. When I still smoked, Dr Fourie gave me hell for it with every visit, but didn’t make me feel less of a human because I did. Not to mention, the very definition of his line of work is wanting you to be in the best health possible, so naturally, being told to quit smoking constantly should be expected.
As far as weight goes, I have hard time believing he treats people horribly if they carry an 10-15 extra pounds, many people do, myself included. That being said, if you’re going into his (or any doctors office) weighing 350 +pounds and smoking one to two packs a day all while not seeming to be bothered about your weight and overall health, how exactly can you expect your doctor to care for or help you?
I’m pretty sure you can figure out who this is Dr. F. I truly appreciate your help and advice when I see you.
Thank You
